Sinossi

Richard Brinsley Sheridan's "The School for Scandal" stands as a quintessential example of English comedy, brilliantly reflecting the sharp social commentary of the late 18th century. This play, first performed in 1777, weaves intricate narratives around themes of scandal, morality, and the hypocrisy of the upper classes. With its sparkling dialogue and masterful use of wit, Sheridan employs a satirical style that dissects the often frivolous pursuits of social elite, effectively placing each character within a web of deception and intrigue, all while drawing upon the conventions of the Restoration comedy genre. Sheridan, a key figure in the English theatrical scene, was deeply influenced by his background as a playwright, politician, and wit. His experiences in London society and his interactions with prominent figures of the time informed his captivating portrayal of human behavior, especially the interplay of appearance versus reality. The keen observations about the nature of gossip and reputation in "The School for Scandal" reflect Sheridan's acute insight into the societal dynamics of his era and reveal his personal disdain for the superficiality of aristocratic life. This remarkable play is essential reading for anyone interested in the development of English drama and the intricate dance of social commentary within it. Sheridan's timeless exploration of human folly, combined with his sharp humor, makes "The School for Scandal" not only a gripping theatrical experience but a mirror reflecting our own society's obsessions with reputation and scandal. Readers and theatergoers alike will find this work offers rich rewards, prompting reflection on the nature of truth and deception.

In 2022, James McDermott lost his sixty-year-old father to COVID after three weeks in intensive care. In* Father Myself*, his second collection from Nine Arches Press, McDermott explores his father's complex illness and death; grief; growth and how as a queer boy then a bereaved son, he had to learn to father himself.
In clear-sighted and often hard-hitting poems, McDermott takes the reader onto the frontline of the pandemic – documenting the experience and trauma of a COVID-bereaved family with an unflinching eye. Both powerful and compassionate, these extraordinary poems have the capacity to go beyond simply a record of events, reaching sensitively for the human details that matter – the beat of a heart and movement of breath, the touch of a hand, the words we use for goodbye.

Lady, the first full collection of poems by Laurie Bolger, arrives 'all giddy with endorphins' and explores the many roles girls and women are asked to play and the dressing-up outfits they try on for size – whether housewife or hen, sister or mum, landlady, exercise instructor or best friend forever. Bolger's poems turn her bold, funny and wise words on boys, body image and the pressure to make yourself fit into a pigeon-hole, when all you really want to do is soar away on your own wings.
Here, these gritty and effervescent poems look to the things that sustain us when navigating an imperfect world obsessed with perfection. Whether dancing in the kitchen, crying in the bath or eating crisps, these poems are equal parts delicious, joyous, and bittersweet. A celebration of the resilience of working-class women and the solidarity and love found in friendship and family, Bolger's poems dare to dream and be wild – and invite us all to join her.

These are called ''' Poems from the Chinese"" and we have Mr. Waley's assurance that there are in existence Oriental originals. But if it be so (and, of course it is) then we have here a literary miracle. It is a platitude that translation of poetry is either bad verse or bad translation. But Mr. Waley, translating not merely from one language into another, but almost from one planet into another, has produced a body of living poetry, in which there is every reason to believe he re-creates, without distorting, the Chinese poets. This is an unparalleled feat. But as we are, with about six exceptions in the whole of Great Britain, incapable of comparing the English and the Chinese, we must address ourselves to these poems as though they had been written by an Englishman of the twentieth century, and judge them on that basis. It is a severe test to apply to translations, but Mr. Waley emerges from it serenely victorious. Indeed, serenity is the keynote of all this work—the serenity of assured mastery in a difficult medium but still more of outlook. The beauty with which these poems are. inlaid is fundamentally a wise beauty and the wisdom is as much in the shape of Mr. Waley's mind as in that of China. There is no need to hurry here. Wisdom goes at an even pace, and has time between her penetrations of the stars to observe the smallest things of life. Her leisurely glance sweeps over them with patient gold, and they settle, almost without a sigh, into decoration and into pattern. We have lost {and the Chinese have lost) the secret of their enamels of the great periods. But Mr. Waley has private access to them, and his poems, varnished with just that cool and even certainty of paint and texture, achieve one filial translation— the translation of colour into speech. -- Humbert Wolfe.
