  History of china is too long and too descriptive to be entirely included in this short book. However, various important parts are included. History of China is often presented in four major parts. First on is the prehistory. Prehistory describes the period, when china was not unified as a single empire. Various parts surrounding modern Beijing were ruled by multiple independent emperors. In 2100 BC, these parts were conquered by Xia dynasty and empire of china was formed. That indicated the journey of china begun in 2100 BC. At risk were the lives of 1,300 employees of the major oil companies and their families working in Iran in December 1978, when revolutionaries overthrew the Shah and wanted everything that went with him - including Western oil personnel - out of the country, or dead. At the helm was the author of this personal and highly revealing memoir. A Scottish lawyer working for the French oil company, Total, in Ahwaz, he had to draw on every inner resource - and unknown telex skills - to airlift his wife, friends, colleagues and others safely out of Iran, first to Abadan and thence to Bahrain and Athens. A senior American manager had already been murdered. These were anxious times for expatriate communities on the Gulf. Evacuate! is essentially a story of frontier life in a state run by a dictatorial Shah that tragically turned back the clock and submitted to clerical rule under Khomeini. As Centurion tanks and troops filled the streets, to be replaced by armed thugs chanting death slogans to Westerners, the author laboured night and day to organise a safe way out. Especially relevant today, his story will appeal to petroleum buffs everywhere, to expatriates, and to lovers of that beautiful and misguided country - Iran.

  Ralph White came to America in the early 1970s while the Vietnam War was still raging. On his Christmas break while teaching courses in Chicago he drove Route 66 to Los Angeles. In the desert of New Mexico he had his first spiritually transcendent experience. He says, “I felt like my mind expanded in consort with the scope of the landscape: seeing the vast stars above, the silence, and just the scale of the landscape.” All this was accompanied by the soundtrack of George Harrison playing My Sweet Lord. “I was having these profound experiences and if they were real then nothing could be more important...I made the decision to follow my heart and investigate.” And his heart took him to Canada, later driving from Vancouver through Central America, ending up in Peru and Ecuador. He received his “life assignment” in Machu Picchu and that was an insight about the need to create a more holistic and ecological world and culture and society. He started the Open Center in New York to do just that. Later, he had many other exciting and enlightening travel experiences including an undercover trek into Tibet and being in Russia during Glasnost.
