  Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in Campden Hill, Kensington on May 29th 1874. 
  Originally after attending St Pauls School he went to Slade to learn the art of illustration.  In 1896 he joined a small London publisher and began his journalistic career as a freelance art and literary critic before going on to writing weekly columns in the Daily News and the Illustrated London News. 
  In 1901 he married Frances Blogg, to whom he remained married for the rest of his life. 
  For many he is known as a very fine novelist and the creator of the Father Brown Detective stories which were much influenced by his own beliefs.  A large man – 6’ 4” and 21st in weight he was apt to be forgetful in that delightful way that the British sometimes are – a telegram home to his wife saying he was in one place but where should he actually be…….? 
  He was prolific in many other areas; he wrote plays, short stories, essays, loved to debate and wrote hundreds of poems.  It is on his poems that we concentrate this volume.  They range from the virtues and vices of England and the English to his world view and religious beliefs. 
  GK Chesterton died of congestive heart failure on 14th June, 1936 and is buried in Beaconsfield just outside of London.

  Alexander Pope was born on May 21st, 1688 in London into a Catholic family.   
  His education was affected by the recent Test Acts, upholding the status of the Church of England and banning Catholics from teaching.  In effect this meant his formal education was over by the age of 12 and Pope was to now immerse himself in classical literature and languages and to, in effect, educate himself.    
  From this age too he also suffered from numerous health problems including a type of tuberculosis (Pott’s disease) which resulted in a stunted, deformed body.  Only to grow to a height of 4’ 6”, with a severe hunchback and complicated further by respiratory difficulties, high fevers, inflamed eyes and abdominal pain all of which served to further isolate him, initially, from society.  
  However his talent was evident to all. Best known for his satirical verse, his translations of Homer and the use of the heroic couplet, he is the second-most frequently quoted writer in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, after Shakespeare.  
  With the publication of Pastorals in 1709 followed by An Essay on Criticism (1711) and his most famous work The Rape of the Lock (1712; revised and enlarged in 1714) Pope became not only famous but wealthy.  
  His translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey further enhanced both reputation and purse.  His engagement to produce an opulent new edition of Shakespeare met with a mixed reception.  Pope attempted to "regularise" Shakespeare's metre and rewrote some of his verse and cut 1500 lines, that Pope considered to be beneath the Bard’s standard, to mere footnotes.  
  Alexander Pope died on May 30th, 1744 at his villa at Twickenham (where he created his famous grotto and gardens) and was buried in the nave of the nearby Church of England Church of St Mary the Virgin.   
  Over the years and centuries since his death Pope’s work has been in and out of favour but with this distance he is now truly recognised as one of England’s greatest poets.

  'She scrubs desperately. Fervently. Furiously. The filth is in the walls and she can feel it in her bones and under her skin.'
  As the stench in their building intensifies and infestations spread, a group of lonely tenants starts to ask questions.
  The housing association will barely lift a finger and pest control 'don't deal with maggots', so the neighbours are left to grapple with their suspicions and fears alone – blurring the boundaries of their usually private lives in the process.
  Farah Najib's play Maggots explores loneliness, systemic failure and what it means to build community. It was first performed in this version at the Bush Theatre, London, in 2026, directed by Jess Barton and produced by Jessie Anand Productions.

  Poetry. A form of words that seems so elegantly simple in one verse and so cleverly complex in another.  Each poet has a particular style, an individual and unique way with words and yet each of us seems to recognise the path and destination of where the verses lead, even if sometimes the full comprehension may be a little beyond us. 
   
  Through the centuries every culture has produced verse to symbolize and to describe everything from everyday life, natural wonders, the human condition and even in its more hubristic moments, the crushing triumph of an enemy. 
   
  In the volumes of this series we take a look through the prism of individual regions of the United States through the centuries and decades. 
   
  The United States may be many things: the world’s policeman, a bully, a shameless purveyor of mass market culture but it also, in its better moments, a standard bearer for truth, transparency, equality and the more positive qualities of democracy. 
   
  Little wonder that’s its poets are rightly acknowledged as wonders of their art.  Leading lights in the fight against slavery and for equality, even if the rest of the Nation is finding it problematic to catch up.   
   
  New York state is more often overshadowed by its energetic and overwhelming five boroughs of its namesake city.  But among its other cities, towns and countryside is a veritable who’s who of classic poets including Walt Whitman, Edith Wharton, Alan Seeger, Herman Melville and Philip Freneau. In poems that explore a variety of formal constraints, such as the suite “ODSP 1, 2, & 3,” which infuses government forms with lyric poetry, she suggests all the ways the medical and bureaucratic systems can dehumanize and traumatize our most vulnerable citizens. By digging deep into her own experiences, Best has archived the ways we fail each other in our most desperate times — while at the same time outlining how we can show up to revel in disabled joy and community. Bad Weather Mammals disassembles dominant narratives about how disabled individuals should be and reconceptualizes the embodied experiences that recenter us in our own narrative.
