  Sure Beats Working follows the story of Freddy Botica, and the series of unexpected twists and turns that ended up being a long and successful career in broadcast radio. 
  Freddy was born in Auckland, New Zealand in 1947 – the youngest child of Croatian parents who fled the conflict of World War II to give their children a new life full of opportunities. 
  In 1969, while working as a signwriter for Coca Cola, Freddy was invited to spend a week aboard the Tiri 2 – the infamous ship that brought pirate radio station Radio Hauraki to the masses in New Zealand. He was on board the ship to repaint a faded sign, but when a severe storm hit Auckland a few days later, Freddy was asked to fill in on air for the rest of the week. His immediate success and appeal on air led to Freddy being offered a full time role with Radio Hauraki – the beginning of what would become a broadcasting career that spanned 5 decades, and broke Australian records. 
  Freddy’s time in radio gave him a chance to not only meet, but spend meaningful moments with many of rock music’s greats – from spending a weekend with Alice Cooper in Sydney, to hosting Sting and the Police at a barbecue on the beachfront lawn of his home. Many broadcasters have interviewed the stars. Very few of them have spent extended periods of time with the stars and their families. A chance meeting with Neil Young’s boat ‘Ragland’ in the Bay of Islands, led to a whole week spent with Neil soon after – windsurfing, and discussing life, family and music. 
  Freddy was then part of the team that took Radio Hauraki to the top of the radio ratings in New Zealand. A radio station that originally didn’t even have a legal license to broadcast was beating all their competition consistently through the late 1970s and early 80s. From there, Freddy was poached by the competition, and was a key member of New Zealand’s first (and also legal) FM radio station, 89fm Stereo.

  Frederick Douglass, born into slavery in Maryland in 1818, became one of the most prominent abolitionists, orators, and writers in American history. His life story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the pursuit of freedom. Douglass escaped slavery in his early twenties and dedicated his life to the abolitionist cause. Through his powerful speeches, autobiographical writings, and activism, he fought for the rights of African Americans and became a leading voice in the fight against slavery. 
   
  Douglass's legacy is rooted in his tireless efforts to expose the atrocities of slavery and advocate for equal rights. His first autobiography, "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave," published in 1845, vividly depicted the brutalities of slavery and its dehumanizing effects. The book became a bestseller and an influential tool in the abolitionist movement. Douglass went on to write two additional autobiographies, "My Bondage and My Freedom" (1855) and "Life and Times of Frederick Douglass" (1881), chronicling his life, experiences, and evolving viewpoints. His writings not only shed light on the horrors of slavery but also provided a platform for him to advocate for education, suffrage, and social justice. 
   
  In addition to his writings, Douglass's oratory skills captivated audiences and galvanized support for the abolitionist cause. He was a powerful and persuasive speaker, delivering speeches that stirred emotions, challenged societal norms, and demanded equality for all. His most famous speech, "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?" delivered in 1852, remains a poignant critique of the hypocrisy of celebrating freedom while denying it to enslaved individuals.

  Salomea Genin was born in 1932 in Berlin to Polish-Jewish parents and fled the Nazis with her family to Australia in 1939. In 1944 she joined the Eureka Youth (Young Communist) League and in 1949 – the beginning of the Cold War – the Australian Communist Party just as the government was planning to ban it.In 1951, as a delegate to the "3rd World Youth Festival" in East Berlin, she wanted to help build an anti-fascist state in the newly-founded German Democratic Republic (East Germany). In 1963, after a nine-year struggle, they finally allowed her in. Twenty years later, she realized that she was living in a police state, one in which she had willingly participated – and became suicidal. By 1985, psychotherapy and writing a book about her family enabled her to find the strength to go into political opposition and build a new life, even before the Berlin Wall and East Germany itself were dismantled in 1989.
