AN NPR BOOK-OF-THE-DAY • A PUBLISHERS WEEKLY STAFF PICK • A NYLON MUST-READ • A FORTUNE NEW BOOK TO READ IN AUGUST
“And, at the center of it all, am I actually nice or am I just performing a role I think I’m expected to play?” Mia Mercado is a razor-sharp cultural critic and essayist known for her witty and hilarious dissections of the uncomfortable truths that rule our lives. In this thought-provoking collection of new essays, Mercado examines what it means to be “polite,” “agreeable,” and “nice.” She covers topics from the subtleties of the “Bad Bitch” and why women dominate the ASMR market, to what makes her dog an adorable little freak and how you know if you’re shy. This is a book about the unspoken trick mirror of our “good” intentions: the inherent performance of the social media apology, celebrating men when they do the bare minimum, and why we trust a Midwesterner to watch our stuff when we go pee.
Throughout, she ponders her identity as an Asian woman and asks what “nice” even means—and why anyone would want to be it. With writing that is as precise as it is profound, and cultural references that range from trash reality television to the New York Times Sunday-morning crossword puzzle, Mercado uncovers weird, long-overdue truths about our frailties and failings. In the end, she sees them not as a source of shame but as a cause for celebration. Filled with revelations that range from the silly to the serious,
She’s Nice Though offers a mind-bending glimpse into the illusions and delusions of contemporary life—and reveals who we *really* are when no one is watching.

Fredrick L. Pumroy never knew what his father or grandfather’s life experiences were except for stories some of there friends told as they avoided talking to their kinfolk about their old day happenings. He had several unique experiences which were tied to historical events. He also was a dedicated husband who loved his family but was still dedicated to serving his country even though it meant being away from them for long durations. He also wanted to show how a Christian can go through life in cycles of doing things not so Christian to doing things that serve others in need. So he decided to write down an account of his life long experiences from birth to retirement. It was initially written to provide a historical document for his descendents, so they will know the trials and tribulations their father and grandfather went through. It is an attempt to capture his real life experiences and describe how those experiences impacted the life of those associated with him. His final reason for writing this book is to give an example of how a person growing up under poor economic conditions could be successful in life and tries to answer the question: why do people do dangerous things even though it may cost them their lives. He also wanted to provide his extended family and all the other people living through similar experiences the incentive to trust in God and follow the philosophy that "You can do whatever you put your mind to, if it is God's Will."

Real Estate, A Love Story shows the next generation of entrepreneurs how to pursue profit while building a human-centered future for American cities.
Growing up on New York's Upper West Side in a bustling family of Jewish immigrants, Joshua Benaim discovered the power of place as he learned from his grandfather the art of minimizing risk while pursuing value in the world's toughest business—New York City real estate. And when a chance encounter in a cab led him to study opera, Benaim's time as a touring baritone inspired him to bring the poetry, passion, and historical authenticity of music to the world of business.
In urban real estate, Benaim sees unique opportunities—the chance for us to follow our dreams, find love, nurture one another, and experience art in the everyday.
But when Covid-19 disrupted our lives, radically changing the way we use our private and public spaces, he faced a question: Are cities—and the real estate industry that sustains them—obsolete?
Benaim says no. The city is not dead. It is being reborn.
Guided by a set of traditional values that prize fairness, honor, beauty, and respect for the communities in which he works, Benaim shares his wisdom through this lyrical story in four parts:
    I. How I Fell in Love with Real Estate
II. Real Estate Investment and the Handshake Philosophy
III. The Art of Real Estate Development
IV: The Future of Real Estate
An intimate blend of memoir and business strategy, Real Estate, A Love Story is a guide for those shaping their own paths and anyone who believes in human, value-driven enterprise.

The Irish nana is a repository of family history, memory and lore. Sometimes, like the Italian nonna, she is also a 'walking cookbook', carrying the old knowledge of how things were best done.
Alice's own grandmothers, Nana Taylor and Nana Ballyduane, were the first generation after the Great Famine, born in the 1860s. These women taught their families the Irish traditions and habits of homemaking that survived for centuries, and are now almost gone.
Now Alice herself is a nana too, and this book takes us through three generations and almost a century and a half. She explores the old and the new, the 'then' and 'now', the nana of yesteryear and of today, with her characteristic empathy and love.
