Sinossi

The Complete Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson is a comprehensive anthology that encapsulates the multifaceted genius of one of America's most profound thinkers and writers. Fusing essays, poems, and lectures, this collection presents Emerson's transcendentalist philosophy, advocating for individualism and a deep connection with nature. Through a rich, lyrical style and a probing, reflective narrative, Emerson explores themes of self-reliance, spirituality, and the innate goodness of humanity, establishing a literary context that bridges Romanticism and early American thought. Each piece reveals how Emerson's voice reverberated through the intellectual currents of his time, shaping American literature and philosophy. Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) was a pivotal figure in 19th-century American thought, influencing a wave of writers and thinkers, including Thoreau and Whitman. His background as a Unitarian minister and his engagement with European philosophy, particularly German Idealism, equipped him with the tools to critique societal norms and champion the individual spirit. Emerson's formative experiences, including those of loss and personal transformation, deeply informed his works, making them resonate through the ages. For readers seeking an enriched understanding of American literature and philosophy, The Complete Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson is an indispensable resource. It offers not only a reflection on individuality and nature but also inspires contemporary discourse about self-discovery and societal engagement. This anthology is a must-read for anyone interested in the evolution of thought that defined a nation.

From Dr. Schott’s 30 years in veterinary practice come over 60 heartwarming, funny, and adorable stories about angry pelicans, bug-eyed goldfish, and plenty of cats and dogs

In the third book in this bestselling series, we meet the oddest creatures, from an escaped newt to a baby snow leopard, but the focus is on the dogs and cats that make up most of a pet vet’s day and on the wacky and wonderful people who bring them in.

Dr. Schott also pulls back the curtain on what it’s really like to be a veterinarian. Do some vet students faint at the sight of blood? (Yes.) Is it easier for vets to bring their own pets in for procedures? (No.) Did the pandemic change veterinary practice? (Yes, and how.)

You will also learn how to bathe a dog, why some rats love cats, why Dr. Schott is afraid of parrots, and a surprising way for a dog to accidentally get drunk. And, of course, you will meet Supercat, the Siamese kitten with the mightiest lungs.

This Is Me Is That You? -...

A psychoanalyst's sensitive exploration of schizophrenia through the stories and words of three women patients

In the spring of 1994, psychoanalyst-in-training Steven Poser arrived for his clinical internship at one of the last remaining nineteenth-century mental hospitals in New England. Intending to observe and offer compassionate care to the most chronically ill patients, he ended up staying for two years, forming close therapeutic relationships with three female patients suffering from schizophrenia, "Agnes," "Mrs. Lutzky," and "Lucia."

Drawing from his clinical diary, Poser presents his encounters with the women in their own words, each speaking in a poetry of her own invention. Rather than treat the women as casualties of their illness or their words and actions as nonsensical, Poser sees his patients as dignified and struggling people—and not as markedly different from the rest of us as we might think. This is a deeply human book about the frailty and importance of human connection and the intangibly healing force of being heard.

Updated 2024 to include significant additional material from 2018 to 2024.
At the 16 week foetal stage, Paul Whymark's brain development was frozen as a consequence of the drug, Thalidomide. His journey is one of considerable self discovery, but also reveals greater societal insights. "16 Weeks and Everything After..."uncovers the remarkable fact that over the last 50-60 years the establishment has failed to genuinely independently review Thalidomide, and as a consequence, harms on developing life continue to have the potential to occur into the future. Worse is that the insidious nature of many of the unacknowledged harms of Thalidomide are still not related to the drug. Hence such consequences are unrecognised and are at odds with official and textbook accounts even over 50 years on. Therefore, as well as appealing to general readers and other professionals, this book urgently needs to be on every medical personnel's (or trainee personnel's) required reading list.
"16 Weeks and Everything After…" manages to communicate the minutia of subtle but all-important detail to uncover a quite different picture to that has been reported thus far. It has been written in an uplifting and heart-warming way, with the attitude of turning negatives into positives, but without losing sight of the underlying issues. The author has sought to stand up for his late mother, who like all mothers of children harmed by drugs consumed during pregnancy, carry the resulting additional challenges. This has sustained Paul's drive through the years of both official impasse and life's ups and downs. The book comprises a set of micro-narratives, but join together to reveal a significant personal journey in addition to a much larger and wider untold picture.
