Sinossi

In "The Collected Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson," readers are invited into the profound intellectual landscape shaped by one of America's foremost Transcendentalists. This comprehensive anthology compiles Emerson's essays, speeches, and poems, reflecting his intricate literary style marked by metaphor, vivid imagery, and contemplative prose. Key themes such as individualism, self-reliance, and the relationship between humanity and nature resonate throughout the text, situating it within the broader context of 19th-century American literature and philosophical thought. Emerson's work illustrates how personal experience serves as a guide to universal truths, making this collection an essential resource for understanding both his role in American letters and the Transcendentalist movement itself. Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) was a philosopher, essayist, and orator whose thoughts were deeply influenced by his Puritan upbringing and experiences in Europe, notably his interactions with contemporary thinkers like Goethe and Coleridge. His keen observations on the nature of existence and individuality were drawn from his belief in the inherent goodness of people and the sanctity of nature. Through his writings, Emerson embarked on a quest to encourage self-sufficiency and a profound connection with the world, inspiring generations to seek truth beyond societal constraints. This volume is highly recommended for those interested in American literature, philosophy, and the Transcendentalist movement. It serves as a vital repository of Emerson's insights, encouraging readers to explore their inner selves while contemplating their roles within a broader social and natural context. Whether you are a scholar, student, or casual reader, this collection will enlighten and challenge your understanding of self and society.

Jack London's novel "The Road," written in the early 20th century, chronicles the adventures and struggles of a young man living as a hobo in America. It particularly emphasizes themes of survival, humanity, and social injustice. Through the protagonist's experiences, the novel delves into the plight of the disenfranchised and reveals the unvarnished truths about American society during that era.
The story begins with the young hobo reflecting on his past experiences, focusing on a specific moment in Reno, Nevada, in the summer of 1892. He shares his struggles with hunger, his attempts to beg for food, and his interactions with various characters, including a wealthy man and a kind woman. The narrative highlights the protagonist's resourcefulness and provides insight into the deep sociology of wanderers—how they cope with societal rejection and rely on the kindness of strangers.
The blend of humor and poignancy in his storytelling sets the tone for an exploration of the life and choices of hobos, as well as the challenges the protagonist faces in escaping the judgment of the world around him.

    “Inspiring and joyous.”—People
""Heartwarming . . . infectious . . . Morillo's The Boy Who Reached for the Stars is every bit the inspiration he means it to be.""—Kirkus Reviews
The engineer known as the “space mechanic” speaks to both our future and past in this breathless memoir of his journey from Ecuador to NASA and beyond.
Elio Morillo’s life is abruptly spun out of orbit when economic collapse and personal circumstances compel his mother to flee Ecuador for the United States in search of a better future for her son. His itinerant childhood sets into motion a migration that will ultimately carry Elio to the farthest expanse of human endeavor: space.
Overcoming a history of systemic adversity and inequality in public education, Elio forged ahead on a journey as indebted to his galactic dreams as to a loving mother whose sacrifices safeguarded the ground beneath his feet. Today, Elio is helping drive human expansion into the solar system and promote the future of human innovation—from AI and robotics to space infrastructure and equitable access.
The Boy Who Reached the Stars is both a cosmic and intimate memoir spun from a constellation of memories, reflections, and intrepid curiosity, as thoroughly luminous as the stars above.

Reading and eating, like Krazy and Ignatz, Sturm und Drang, prosciutto and melon, Simon and Schuster, and radishes and butter, have always, for me, simply gone together. The book is a product of these combined gluttonies.

Dwight Garner, the beloved New York Times critic and the author of Garner's Quotations, serves up the intertwined pleasures of books and food. The product of a lifetime of obsessively reading, eating, and every combination therein, The Upstairs Delicatessen: On Eating, Reading, Reading About Eating, and Eating While Reading is a charming, emotional memoir that only Garner could write. In it, he records the voices of great writers and the stories from his life that fill his mind as he moves through the sections of the day and of this book: breakfast, lunch, shopping, the occasional nap, drinking, and dinner.

Through his lifelong infatuation with these twin joys, we meet the man behind the pages and the plates, and a portrait of Garner, eager and insatiable, emerges. He writes with tenderness and humor about his mayonnaise-laden childhood in West Virginia and Naples, Florida (and his father's famous peanut butter and pickle sandwich), his mind-opening marriage to a chef from a foodie family, and the words and dishes closest to his heart. This is a book to be savored, though it may just whet your appetite for more.

The years intervening since the abolition of American slavery leave a majority of our people ignorant of its workings, and of matters connected with it, except as they are gleaned from the pages of history, or from the lips of those now grown old.It is not the purpose of this little volume to discuss the history of the “peculiar institution” in detail, but simply to give so much of it as will make appreciable the cause for another one equally “peculiar,” known for the last twenty years of its existence as the Underground Railroad,—a name for a mode of operation, and not of a corporation or material object.During the years of its operation, secrecy was a cardinal, an imperative principle of its management, as the following pages will make apparent. On the breaking out of the War of the Rebellion, thus putting an end to its operations, every other subject was swallowed up in the excitement of the great struggle, and subsequently in that of Reconstruction. Thus the Road dropped measurably out of sight, leaving but meager reports and archives to tell the story of its working. The promptings of a desire to leave to posterity some realistic record of this, one of the most wonderful and thrilling features of our national history, vino parallel to which is afforded in the annals of time, must be the excuse for these pages. During the eighties, the writer, who had lived amid its excitements for years, and was more or less familiar with the writings of Coffin, Pettit, the Clarkes and others, undertook a systematic research into the matter, the result of which was the accumulation of a large fund of incident and information pertaining to the Road, much of which was published in the Home Magazine between the years 1883 and 1889, inclusive. Those articles, in part, carefully revised, are now placed before the reader in this more permanent form, with the hope that they may receive the generous approval of an appreciative public. The Author
