Sinossi

Geyser Park Wonders explores the fascinating world of geothermal areas, revealing the science behind geysers, hot springs, and the unique ecosystems they support. These dynamic landscapes offer a glimpse into Earth's internal processes, shaped by volcanic activity and tectonic forces. One intriguing fact is the existence of extremophiles—microbial life thriving in extreme heat and chemical conditions, offering clues about the origins of life itself. The book delves into the geological history of these areas, explaining how magma plumes and groundwater systems interact. It also examines the delicate balance of these ecosystems, showcasing the importance of understanding geochemistry and hydrology to preserve these natural wonders. The book further explores the history of scientific exploration and the potential for geothermal energy. Beginning with the fundamental concepts of geothermal activity, the book progresses through the history of scientific investigation, the unique microbial communities, and the management and preservation of these environments. It concludes by discussing the implications of geothermal research for climate change, energy production, and the search for life beyond Earth, making it a valuable resource for anyone interested in Earth Sciences and environmental science.

Astronomer and science writer David Whitehouse takes us on a journey through the evolving cosmos as he considers humankind's place in the universe - and how our survival depends on otherworldly perspectives.

From the Earth to the depths of outer space, this inspiring book shows how human evolution has been intertwined with the workings of the cosmos from the very beginning, and what the far-distant future may hold, both for the universe and for ourselves.

Given enough time, Whitehouse contends, we must communicate with intelligent aliens whose divergent perspective will transform our understanding of the universe. First contact may even come sooner than we think. We have already transmitted signals towards promising exoplanets. If, say, Gliese 581d harbours life, the return signal could reach us in 2051.

Drawing the thread of human consciousness from the cave to the cosmos, the acclaimed author of Apollo 11: The Inside Story charts our future journey to the end of space and time and considers whether something of humanity could remain at the end of it all.

Great Sierra Waters, the Eastern Slope is a definitive study of the Truckee River but also includes the Owens and the East Walker. It's a serious fly-fishing book that shows you how to fish these rivers, what to use as far as fly patterns, and how to tie them for your greatest success. In addition to the fishing information which represents 60 years of fishing knowledge by the author, it details the plight of the Lahontan Cutthroat that has existed in the Truckee River drainage for 10 million years. This drainage runs from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake and the Cutthroats have been famous since the 1930's when fishermen flocked from all over the world to fish for them.
In the last twenty years the original strain was found in a few tributaries in the Pilot Peak range of north central Nevada. They have taken hold again in Pyramid Lake and fish in excess of 30 pounds are currently available and they're running up the Truckee to spawn. The demise of the Truckee began with the building of Derby Dam in the early 1900s. The last great spawning run occurred in 1938, and the average fish weighed 18 1/2 pounds. The last great Cutthroat trout was caught in 1949 in downtown Reno, Nevada and weighed twenty-two pounds and ten ounces.
As a boy, author Terry Courtright fished it constantly from the time he was 10 years old until he left for college. He later came back and wrote outdoor columns about fly fishing the Truckee, then moved back to Montana to fish all of the great waters in the West. As we speak, there is a great resurgence of interest in recovering this fish in this fishery and Courtright's last chapter on this book called The Restoration of the Lahontan Cutthroat brings to light the most sophisticated and workable fisheries plan that has ever been developed. Great Sierra Waters is a welcome and timely addition to knowledge of the trout fisheries everywhere.

A hundred years. Thousands of women. One extraordinary pond.
I have learned about peacocks and terrapins, giant cobras and booming widgeons; I have heard about celebrity spottings and al-fresco lovemaking and digestive biscuits. These things make up the history of the Ladies’ Pond, but they also give us an insight into a hundred years of women’s lives.
From code breakers to cake bakers, I have learned that there is no such thing as a ‘normal woman’; and over the last hundred years the Pond has played host to thousands of remarkable people.
For a century, the Ladies’ Pond on Hampstead Heath has welcomed women from every walk of life: artists and activists, swimmers and sunbathers, friends and free spirits. As Britain’s most famous female open-air swimming spot, a pocket of wildness tucked away in the middle of the city, it has long attracted adventurous swimmers from all over the UK and the wider world.
Brave and Bold celebrates one hundred years of this beloved London landmark through the rhythm of a single swimming year, from frozen Januarys to sun-drenched midsummers; through friendships, feminist activism and the exhilaration of open water.
Created in collaboration with the Kenwood Ladies’ Pond Association and rich with previously unseen archive material and new interviews – from Dolly Alderton and Amy Liptrot to lifelong swimmers of every era – this is far more than the story of one pond. It’s a story of community, women and wild water across a century of social and political change, from suffragettes to soap stars, war to liberation, and shared flasks of tea to acts of quiet rebellion.
Brave and Bold is both a love letter to Hampstead Heath and to every woman who has ever felt most at home bobbing about in open water.
Brave and Bold is non-fiction with the warmth of autobiography, attentive to nature and to the ponds, habitats and ecosystems that make the Ladies’ Pond feel like a world apart. Through that lens, feminism becomes a daily practice—held in friendships, rituals, and the simple bravery of stepping into open water.
For fans of Dolly Alderton (Everything I Know About Love), Sara Pascoe (Animal), and Daisy Buchanan (How to Be a Grown-Up).
