  Tearing of The Curtain in The...

  What was the purpose of the massive curtain, or veil, that was in the temple in Jerusalem? And what is so significant about the fact that it was torn from the top to the bottom at the precise time Jesus died on the cross?   Theologian Timothy Luke Johnson says that the tearing of the temple curtain could symbolise "the end of the old covenant of atonement through animal sacrifice and the beginning of a 'new covenant'" (Johnson 379). In this "New Covenant" a priest would no longer be needed.
