Hugh John Lofting was born in Maidenhead, Berkshire on January 14th, 1886 to English and Irish parents.
Lofting was initially educated at Mount St Mary’s College in Spinkhill, Derbyshire, a Jesuit boarding school from the age of eight. By 1905 at age eighteen he was to study abroad, taking classes at the esteemed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA in civil engineering. Thereafter he embarked on a quest to travel widely before settling down to write of his adventures.
Lofting had always leaned towards pacifism but the Great War was about to erupt all over Europe. Initially Lofting worked for the British Government whilst based in New York but by 1918 he had enlisted and was fighting on the front line. Life on the front line, in the trenches, was hell beyond description. Lofting didn’t want to include this grim horror in letters to his children. The answer for them and for him was to write. With these first letters the imaginative world and the foundations of the very successful Doctor Dolittle novels for children now began.
But life, for Lofting, in the battle weary trenches was now rudely interrupted. In 1918, as the Allies swept forward against the retreating German lines, Lofting was wounded by shrapnel from a hand grenade that lodged in his upper thigh. This injury would plague him for the rest of his life as some of the metal fragments were impossible to remove.
After his recovery he was invalided out of the Army. It was now that the family decided to re-locate and they now moved to Killingworth, Connecticut, in the United States. It was to be from here that the Doctor Dolittle series; the adventures of a country physician who learned to talk with animals would be written.
As we know the books were successful around the world and have been adapted for film and television many times, as well as for stage and for radio.
Hugh John Lofting died on September 26th, 1947, at age 61 in Topanga, California.

Behind the crumbling walls of St Grace's Convent, an exhausted order of nuns needs resurrecting. As Easter approaches, Mother Elizabeth has just the thing.
Behold 'Mary', a council-funded robot. Practical and surprisingly funny, for some a blessing, for others a curse – could she be the revelation they have all been praying for?
Electric Rosary is a sharp, timely and gloriously funny play by Tim Foley, asking what faith really means in the age of artificial intelligence and what it is to be human in tomorrow's world. It was a Judges' Award winner in the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting, and premiered at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, in April 2022.

Wise and funny, touching and true, What We’re Teaching Our Sons is for anyone who has ever wondered how to be a grown up.
We’re teaching our sons about money; about heartbreak, and mountains, and philosophy. We’re teaching them about the big bang and the abominable snowman and what happens when you get struck by lightning. We’re teaching them about the toughness of single mothers, and the importance of having friends who’ve known you longer than you’ve known yourself, and the difference between zombies and vampires.
We’re teaching them about sex, although everyone would be a lot happier if the subject had never come up…
Meet the married Dads, the divorced Dads, the widowed Dads and the gay Dads; the gamblers, the firemen, the bankers, the nurses, the soldiers and the milkmen. They’re trying to guide their sons through the foothills of childhood into the bewildering uplands of adulthood. But it’s hard to know if they’re doing it right.
Or what their sons’ mothers think…
Wise and funny, touching and true, What We’re Teaching Our Sons is for anyone who has ever wondered how to be a grown up.
Booth's collection of essays on fatherhood and family life is a literary gem. The themes of parenting and relationships are explored in depth, making it a top choice for readers interested in these topics.

In September 2017, Helen Calcutt's brother Matthew took his own life. He was 40 years old.
'… the phone rang / and when I answered it / you'd killed / yourself, and that was the start / of you being dead.'
This is the starting point of an astonishing new pamphlet of poems by Helen Calcutt. At times harrowing; at others hopeful – always deeply felt and beautifully realised. These poems display the poise and precision of a poet already at the height of her powers, writing the un-writable, weaving the terrible into something relatable and filled with the light of understanding.
How do we survive the tumultuous presence of grief? How does the trauma of losing a loved one to suicide affect, our identity, our creativity, and our ability to love? How – in a world shattered by incomparable change and severe loss – do we build a life from the wreckage? Because we do.
    Somehow, we do.

Birds rule the sky—and man—in this entertaining work by the Ancient Greek playwright known for Lysistrata and The Clouds.   This award-winning comedy—first performed in Greece in 414 BC—remains a delightful read even after two millennia. As the birds of Athens express their frustration about sharing a realm with humans, they hatch a plan to build their own empire in the sky: Cloud-cuckoo-land. Soon they are exercising their power as they form a barrier between mortals and the Olympians—and declare themselves the new gods.
