  Since ancient times, the Hindus have had a lunisolar cycle based on the combination of solar and lunar years, determined by the course of the sun and the moon, but with the lunar year beginning near the solar year. Exactly how their earliest Calendar was arranged remains a mystery. Our focus is on the current form of their Calendar, developed around 400 under the influence of Greek astronomy and introduced into India at no long time. 
  There are two kinds of Hindu years, solar and lunar.  
  To understand the lunar Calendar, we will first explain the solar year, which governs the lunisolar system. Bengal, including Madras's Orissa, Tamil, and Malayalam districts, used solar years for civil purposes. General religious rites and festivals are regulated by the lunar year and the details of private and domestic life, such as choosing auspicious occasions for marriages and journeys, choosing lucky moments for shaving, etc. Almanacs that follow the lunar year contain details about the solar year, such as the sun's course through the zodiac signs. Despite following the solar year, almanacs include lunar year details.

  In this provocative & immensely irritating comic play, the Sphinx from ancient Greece is interviewed in modern times as though she were a celebrity pop star. The problem is she never answers any questions — never directly anyway. Instead she prefers just dishing the dirt on everybody. ON HOMER: “I never was exactly sure which one Homer was. Part Tom Stoppard, part Monty Python, part Oscar Wilde, this play by Jack Matthews combines philosophical paradoxes with fast-paced verbal pyrotechnics. It offers the perfect antidote to people who remembered ancient literature as nothing but stuffy and melodramatic characters with hard-to-pronounce names.  
  Neal Gage  is a Houston actor and teacher who has appeared in several features and comic sketch videos on  Funny or Die. Jill Brumer has an MFA in Media & Performing Arts and teaches theater at Houston colleges. Jack Matthews (1925-2013) was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, playwright and former professor in Ohio. 
  The play was first published & performed in 1992; later it was revised & expanded for the 2013 audio production.

  In ancient China, a woman’s place in society was shaped by a deep-rooted system of values that emphasized hierarchy, duty, and tradition. From birth, girls were taught the virtues of obedience, humility, and domestic responsibility—qualities believed to ensure familial harmony and uphold social order. These expectations were not merely cultural but were reinforced by state philosophy, especially Confucianism, which placed women within a strict patriarchal structure. 
  Confucian teachings emphasized a "Three Obediences" rule: a woman must obey her father before marriage, her husband during marriage, and her son in widowhood. This framework confined women largely to the private sphere and discouraged female independence. Even so, this ideology did not completely erase their influence. Women often wielded subtle but meaningful power within the home, guiding family affairs, managing finances, and raising the next generation in accordance with moral and cultural norms. 
  Women’s lives were further shaped by their class and family background. Elite women had access to education, poetry, and the arts, and they could sometimes play key roles in managing household affairs or even participating in court life. Their influence, though largely informal, could stretch far when navigating palace politics or securing power through marriage alliances. In contrast, women of lower classes worked alongside men in the fields, sold goods in markets, or labored in homes and workshops. These working women formed the backbone of the economy, though their contributions often went unrecorded in historical texts.
