  Jamestown is remembered today because the settlement did survive through the hardships and go on to serve as the capital of the English colony for much of the 17th century. Likewise, the English would forge a settlement in Massachusetts Bay that also maintained tenuous relations with nearby natives. But while conflicts between settlers and natives remain well known, some of the European conflicts in North America have been overlooked, including England’s competitions with Spain and the Netherlands. When the West India Company, which presided over Dutch trade in the Americas, was created in 1621, a little settlement at the tip of Manhattan began to both grow and falter. When Willem Kieft arrived as director in 1638, it was already a sort of den of iniquity, full of “mischief and perversity,” where residents were given over to smoking and drinking grog and beer. Under Kieft’s reign, more land was acquired mostly through bloody, all-but-exterminating wars with the Native American population, whose numbers also dwindled at the hands of European-borne diseases.  
  	On September 13, 1759, a battle was fought on the Plains of Abraham outside the old city of Quebec that was one of the turning point battles in world history. Thanks to the British victory and the events that followed, Canada went from being a colony of France (New France) to being a colony of Great Britain, which permanently changed Canadian history. In many ways, the outcome of the battle brought about several American attempts to seize Canada during the Revolutionary War and War of 1812, and ultimately it ensured that when Canada became an independent country, it was part of the British Commonwealth with an Anglophone majority and a Francophone minority. Frictions over cultural and political issues between the English Canadians and the Québécois, dating back to the battle, continue to impact the state of affairs in Canada today.

  The Great Sphinx of Giza is one of the most iconic and enigmatic monuments in the world. It stands as a symbol of ancient Egypt's grandeur, captivating historians, archaeologists, and tourists alike. The monument, which lies near the pyramids of Giza, is a colossal limestone statue with the body of a lion and the head of a human, believed to represent the Pharaoh Khafre. Its massive size and mysterious features have sparked fascination and numerous theories about its purpose, creation, and significance throughout history. 
  The origins of the Sphinx are shrouded in mystery, with its construction dating back to the Old Kingdom of Egypt, around 2500 BCE. Some scholars believe that the Sphinx was carved during the reign of Pharaoh Khafre, who also commissioned the construction of the second pyramid at Giza. Others propose that the monument predates Khafre's reign, possibly dating back to the reign of his father, Pharaoh Sneferu. While the precise dating remains uncertain, the Sphinx is undoubtedly a product of Egypt's architectural and artistic achievements, built to withstand the test of time. 
  The significance of the Sphinx in ancient Egyptian culture is multifaceted. In Egyptian mythology, lions were often associated with strength, power, and protection. The body of the lion, combined with the human head, symbolizes the union of human intelligence and animal strength, a combination that represented the ideal qualities of a ruler. The Sphinx’s location near the pyramids further emphasizes its role as a guardian, watching over the tombs of the pharaohs and ensuring their safe passage into the afterlife. The monument also reflects the Egyptians' reverence for their gods and the divine authority bestowed upon their rulers.

  We are witnessing a worldwide resurgence of reactionary ideologies and movements, combined with an escalating assault on democratic institutions and structures. Nevertheless, most studies of these phenomena remain anchored in a methodological nationalism, while comparative research is almost entirely limited to the Global North. Yet, authoritarian transformations in the South — and the struggles against them — have not only been just as dramatic as those in the North but also preceded them, and consequently have been studied by Southern scholars for many years. 
  
  This volume brings together the work of more than 15 scholar-activists from across the Global South, combining in-depth studies of regional processes of authoritarian transformation with a global perspective on authoritarian capitalism.
