Sinossi

Piero Martinetti (1872–1943) represents one of the highest and, paradoxically, most isolated peaks of 20th-century Italian philosophical thought. A historian of philosophy and an original thinker, his figure is distinguished by an unwavering ethical integrity and a speculative depth that places him outside the dominant currents of his time, such as the neo-Hegelianism of Benedetto Croce and Giovanni Gentile. His system, known as "transcendent idealism", constitutes a unique bridge between the European rationalist tradition—with Kant, Spinoza, and Schopenhauer at its forefront—and the spiritualist metaphysics of the East, particularly the Samkhya system. The Animal Psyche, the essay by Piero Martinetti that we propose to our readers today, was the subject of a lecture given by the philosopher in 1920 at the Milanese Society for Philosophical and Religious Studies. Both in this text and in another later one, Compassion Toward Animals, Martinetti argued that animals, just like human beings, possess intellect and consciousness, and that therefore ethics must not be limited to the regulation of inter-human relations but must also necessarily extend to seeking well-being and happiness for all those sentient forms of life (i.e., those provided with a nervous system) which, like man, are capable of feeling joy and pain.

This is a story about a family coming of age at the same time as smartphones and social media; a multiracial family coming into its own as windows into social injustice opened up before our very screens; and a multi-parent multi-professional family with children living differently depending on which house and which combination of family members happen to be home. While it is a story about a family, it is really the story of technological and global changes unfolding on our doorsteps.

While many revile the ascendance of smartphones and social media and the way they suck us into the vortex of cyberspace, there are cultural touchpoints that reflect deeper human and technology development patterns, patterns which we would all do well to understand, no matter whether or how we choose to engage in the ever-innovating digital frontiers. Informed by research and interviews with leaders in policy, human development, ethics, and technology, Loretta Brady helps listeners understand the complex systemic challenges and findings related to technology and human development.

We do not have to hate or fear technology. It is neither friend nor foe. But understanding its impact on our daily lives is paramount to cultivating a healthier relationship both with our digital lives and our real, lived ones.

“We are matter and long to be received by an Earth that conceived us, which accepts and reconstitutes us, its children, each of us, without exception, every one. The journey is long, and then we start homeward, fathomless as to what home might make of us.”When Chris Dombrowski burst onto the literary scene with Body of Water, the book was acclaimed as “a classic” (Jim Harrison) and its author compared with John McPhee. Dombrowski begins the highly anticipated The River You Touch with a question as timely as it is profound: “What does a meaningful, mindful, sustainable inhabitance on this small planet look like in the anthropocene?”He answers this fundamental question of our time initially by listening lovingly to rivers and the land they pulse through in his adopted home of Montana. Transplants from the post-industrial Midwest, he and his partner, Mary, assemble a life based precariously on her income as a schoolteacher, his as a poet and fly-fishing guide. Before long, their first child arrives, followed soon after by two more, all “free beings in whom flourishes an essential kind of knowing […], whose capacity for wonder may be the beacon by which we see ourselves through this dark epoch.” And around the young family circles a community of friends—river-rafting guides and conservationists, climbers and wildlife biologists—who seek to cultivate a way of living in place that moves beyond the mythologized West of appropriation and extraction.Moving seamlessly from the quotidian—diapers, the mortgage, a threadbare bank account—to the metaphysical—time, memory, how to live a life of integrity—Dombrowski illuminates the experience of fatherhood with intimacy and grace. Spending time in wild places with their children, he learns that their youthful sense of wonder at the beauty and connectivity of the more-than-human world is not naivete to be shed, but rather wisdom most of us lose along the way—wisdom that is essential for the possibility of transformation.

Planetary Systems - A Very Short...

Not long ago, the Solar System was the only example of a planetary system—a star and the bodies orbiting it—that we knew. Now, we know thousands of planetary systems, and have even been able to observe planetary systems at the moment of their birth.

This Very Short Introduction explores this new frontier, incorporating the latest research. The book takes the listener on a journey through the grand sweep of time, from the moment galaxies begin to form after the Big Bang to trillions of years in the future when the Universe will be a dilute soup of dim galaxies populated mostly by red dwarf stars. Throughout, Raymond T. Pierrehumbert introduces the latest insights gained from a new generation of telescopes that catch planetary systems at the moment of formation, and to the theoretical advances that attempt to make sense of these observations. He explains how the elements that make up life and the planets on which life can live are forged in the interiors of dying stars, and make their way into rocky planets. He also explores the vast array of newly discovered planets orbiting stars other than our own, and explains the factors that determine their climates. Finally, he reveals what determines how long planetary systems can live, and what happens in their end-times.
