  William Wymark Jacobs was born on 8th September 1863 in Wapping, East London.  
  He was educated at a private school and then Birkbeck Literary and Scientific Institution, now part of the University of London. 
  In 1879, Jacobs began work as a clerk in the civil service, in the Post Office Savings Bank.  In 1885 his first short story was published but it was not until almost the turn of the century that he would abandon his post office career to that as a full-time writer. By then he was a very popular author, his collections selling extremely well and with an excellent income. 
  His best-known work is the macabre ‘The Monkey's Paw’ and he is also highly regarded for his ghost stories although much of his remaining short story output is streaked with humour.  His characters are immediately identifiable and we all know that life will take chunks out of them in no time at all.  
  Jacobs married the noted suffragette Agnes Eleanor Williams in 1900 at West Ham, Essex. They went on to have two daughters and three sons as they settled down to life.  
  By the outbreak of the First World War his literary output had declined and he now mainly spent his time rewriting his earlier stories for the stage.  In all he wrote 18 plays. 
  W W Jacobs died on 1st September 1943 at Hornsey Lane, Islington in London. He was 79.

  How To Burn This Book

  Step one of burning a book is finding a disagreeable premise within. To simplify this process, each story is followed by a reason it should be immolated, opined by the author’s critics. 
  "Lucky Girl Noir" is about a cop solving the murder of a ‘Lucky Girl,’ a woman born with probability consistently in her favor. Burning this story would be a win against plagiarism. 
  "Three Days West" is an acid-Western about cowboys exploiting their otherworldly connection in frontier Colorado. This story deserves burning for ruining pulp heroes. 
  "Zantar" is Tarzan with aliens and raccoons. Burning seems appropriate, as it continues the author’s insatiable bloodlust. 
  "Sea Creatures" is a sapphic love story between a siren and a mermaid. The story deserves burning for suggesting bras are an art form. 
  "Lizard People Take Orlando" tells the story of Zaffre Davis, a student running for mayor while keeping his life as a scalie secret. Burning should be considered due to its depictions of furries as Democrats. 
  "The Spirit Realm" is about the survivor of a mass poisoning who wakes up to find he can talk to alcohol. No character represents absinthe, a crime best punished by burning. 
  "The Pimp That Slapped the Ripper" is about the fall of Jack the Ripper at the hands of a procurer who will protect her property at any cost. The author’s softness has robbed the story of graphic detail; their omission begets burning. 
  "Washed" is the story of a man who loses his memory when he showers. Burn this one to eliminate the author’s ugly past. 
  "An American Weekend" is about a boy visited by the human embodiments of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, who guide him out of his funk. Turn it to ashes; this interpretation of the weekend reeks of privilege. 
  "Roadwork" is about a lemurtologist, an exorcist for the DMV who removes ghosts from road accidents. Tossing this story in the fire could wound a hateful author, smudging the name of the DMV.

  Diplomacy - From their pens to...

  Lafcadio Hearn was born on the 27th June 1850 on the Ionian isle of Levkás in Greece to a British Army officer and a Greek Mother. 
  His father, fearing for his career prospects at being married to a Greek Orthodox wife, sent them to Dublin whilst he continued to advance his career with further postings.  Life there was difficult for mother and son.  His father returned, wounded and traumatised, when Lafcadio was three.  He annulled the marriage and she remarried but had to give up care of Lafcadio to her sister-in law.   
  After brief periods for Catholic education in England and France he emigrated to Ohio in the United States when he was 19, taking on a series of casual jobs before embarking on a career as a journalist, publishing poems and essays in Cincinnati.  It was whilst here that he began a side-line in translating, starting with Gautier and Flaubert.  He married in 1874 to a 20 year old African-American woman in violation of Ohio's anti-miscegenation law.  The marriage soon failed. 
  In 1877 he relocated to New Orleans to write on a variety of themes before picking up a two year assignment from Harper’s to write in the West Indies, where he also wrote his first novel. 
  In 1890 Harper’s sent him to Japan.  Here he left journalism and took the remarkable decision to become a schoolteacher in the north of Japan.   Enraptured by the culture he was driven to explain it in various Western publications to those who had little, if any, knowledge of its culture.  Within the year he had fallen in love with, and married, a high-born Japanese lady, together they would have four children.   
  In 1895 he became a Japanese national and took the name Koizumi Yakumo, Koizumi being his wife’s family name. 
  The following few years, whilst a professor of Literature at the Imperial University of Japan, were his most creative and admired period.   
  Lafcadio Hearn died of heart failure on the 26th of September 1904, in Tokyo, Japan shortly before leaving to deliver a series of lectures at Cornell University in New York State.  He was 54.
