Sinossi

Moscow is a city of slow historical growth, and down to the present time its different parts have wonderfully well retained the features which have been stamped upon them in the slow course of history. The Trans-Moskva River district, with its broad, sleepy streets and its monotonous gray painted, low-roofed houses, of which the entrance-gates remain securely bolted day and night, has always been the secluded abode of the merchant class, and the stronghold of the outwardly austere, formalistic, and despotic Nonconformists of the ‘Old Faith.’ The citadel, or Kreml is still the stronghold of Church and State; and the immense space in front of it, covered with thousands of shops and warehouses, has been for centuries a crowded beehive of commerce, and still remains the heart of a great internal trade which spreads over the whole surface of the vast empire. The Tverskáya and the Smiths’ Bridge have been for hundreds of years the chief centres for the fashionable shops; while the artisans’ quarters, the Pluschíkha and the Dorogomílovka, retain the very same features which characterized their uproarious populations in the times of the Moscow Tsars. Each quarter is a little world in itself; each has its own physiognomy, and lives its own separate life. Even the railways, when they made an irruption into the old capital, grouped apart in special centres on the outskirts of the old town their stores and machine-works and t
Politicsheir heavily loaded carts and engines.
However, of all parts of Moscow, none, perhaps, is more typical than that labyrinth of clean, quiet, winding streets and lanes which lies at the back of the Kreml, between two great radial streets, the Arbát and the Prechístenka, and is still called the Old Equerries’ Quarter—the Stáraya Konyúshennaya.

Winston Churchill is remembered as one of history’s most formidable leaders, a man whose unwavering resolve and stirring oratory inspired a beleaguered nation to withstand its darkest hour. Rising to prominence during one of humanity’s most perilous times, Churchill’s leadership during World War II not only shaped the fate of Britain but left an indelible mark on the global landscape. His life and career encapsulate the qualities of resilience, vision, and adaptability that are crucial during moments of profound crisis.

Born into an aristocratic family in 1874, Churchill's early life was one of privilege, yet his path to greatness was anything but guaranteed. Despite academic struggles and initial failures, he demonstrated remarkable tenacity, carving out a career as a soldier, journalist, and eventually a politician. His varied experiences—whether charging on horseback in colonial campaigns or reporting from the frontlines—imbued him with a deep understanding of courage and strategy, traits that would serve him well in the years to come.

Churchill’s rise to the role of wartime Prime Minister was far from linear. By the late 1930s, his political career seemed to be in decline. His outspoken criticism of appeasement policies and his relentless warnings about Adolf Hitler’s ambitions rendered him an isolated figure, often dismissed as a relic of an earlier age. Yet, as Europe hurtled toward war, Churchill’s foresight and defiance became assets too valuable to ignore. In 1940, as Nazi Germany’s forces swept across the continent, Churchill was called upon to lead.

The inspiring story of a feisty pioneering woman who sought freedom and adventure in the outback and became the first woman to work as an opal miner in Australia.

People always asked her if she was ever afraid, living out in the desert alone with all those rough and scruffy men. But Minnie Berrington was not the faint-hearted type, and never had been. Being tough came naturally to her, growing up with three brothers and a family that went from riches to ruins.

Only a slip of a girl, Minnie could match any man in stamina, perseverance and strength. She arrived in Coober Pedy when camels still brought in essential supplies, and water was so scarce that no-one washed. Together with the other miners, she braved the heat, the flies and the dust. Every day she waited for that special sound the pick made when it cracked opal.

The first woman to dig her own shafts in the Australian opal fields, Minnie began her working life as a typist in London. But she and her younger brother, Victor, sought freedom and adventure in the 1920s and found plenty of it in the outback.
