Notable characters featured in “Famous Men of the Middle Ages” include Attila the Hun, Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, Frederick Barbarossa, Marco Polo, and William Tell. This book also includes a chapter about one woman: Joan of Arc. This book provides a great introduction to the Middle Ages, not only for children, but for adults who missed out on studying some of the more fascinating figures during this time period. John Haaren, who also wrote Famous Men of Greece, Famous Men of Rome, and Famous Men of the Middle Ages, was an American educator and historian. Haaren's father was German and his mother Irish. He studied under Professor N. M. Butler at Columbia University, 1889-91, before becoming a teacher in New York. In 1907 he became Associate Superintendent of Schools in New York, increasing the number and efficiency of kindergartens and starting classes to teach English to foreigners. He was president of the department of pedagogy in the Brooklyn Institute. Haaren High School which was located in Manhattan named in his honor. The Charles B. J. Snyder-designed school, which was initially De Witt Clinton High School, is now Haaren Hall on the campus of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

  Simón Bolívar, born Simón José Antonio de la Santísima Trinidad Bolívar, was a prominent Venezuelan military and political leader who played a pivotal role in the liberation of several South American countries from Spanish colonial rule. Bolívar's full name, a reflection of the Spanish naming tradition, encompassed multiple middle names, highlighting his family's social status. His leadership and vision helped Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, and Bolivia secure their independence from the Spanish Empire during the early 19th century. 
  Bolívar was born into a wealthy, aristocratic family in Caracas, Venezuela. As was customary for the sons of affluent families at the time, he was sent abroad to receive his education. Initially, he traveled to Spain and later to France, where he encountered Enlightenment ideals that deeply influenced his political and philosophical beliefs. These ideas, particularly the notions of liberty and self-determination, fueled his desire to rid Latin America of Spanish control. Bolívar’s campaign for independence began in earnest in 1808, seizing the opportunity presented by the political instability in Spain caused by the Napoleonic Wars. This chaos allowed Bolívar and other revolutionaries to push forward their independence efforts.

  Establishment of the League of...

  The United Nations is one of the most famous bodies in the world, and its predecessor, the League of Nations, might be equally notorious. In fact, President Woodrow Wilson’s pet project was controversial from nearly the minute it was conceived. Wilson mostly found himself shut out, but Britain and France did not want American contributions to the war to go totally unappreciated, if only out of fear that the U.S. might turn towards improving their relations with Germany in response. Thus, to appease Wilson and the Americans, France and Britain consented to the creation of a League of Nations. However, even though his participation in the crafting of the Treaty of Versailles earned him a Nobel Prize that year, Wilson soon learned to his consternation that diplomacy with Congress would go no better than his diplomacy with European leaders. The only major provision that Wilson achieved in Europe, the League of Nations, was the most controversial in the United States.   
  	While it would attempt to resolve some territorial disputes, it simply proved too weak to prevent international aggression, primarily among the Axis Powers in the buildup to World War II. Thus, the League’s greatest legacy ended up being its dismal failure to prevent World War II and ensure that World War I had truly been the “war to end all wars,” as originally intended.  
  	Although the League of Nations was short-lived and clearly failed in its primary mission, it did essentially spawn the United Nations at the end of World War II, and many of the UN’s structures and organizations came straight from its predecessor, with the concepts of an International Court and a General Assembly coming straight from the League. More importantly, the failures of the League ensured that the UN was given stronger authority and enforcement mechanisms, most notably through the latter’s Security Council, and the UN has survived the last 80 years.
