Sinossi

Aviation has always been a source of fascination, but the industry is not without occasional shocks and surprises. Flight crews are expected to communicate perfectly at all times, to manage complex situations, and to make the right decisions at the right times. In the corporate world, it is no different. And this is where professional pilot and communication expert Peter Brandl draws remarkable parallels between these two worlds.
Crash Communication takes his audience on an exciting journey between airplane cockpits and the business world. It combines spectacular incidents from aviation and business with everyday communication scenarios. How is it that, in spite of the highest safety precautions, catastrophic air accidents still occur from time to time? Similarly, how is it possible that a lender would give $320 million to an insolvent US bank? Crash Communication shows that the factor of "human error" follows a fatal logic. Peter Brandl offers original and relevant answers to fundamental questions of leadership and communication. His fascinating approach shows managers and executives in the “corporate cockpit" what to do when the warning lights come on.
“This book is a must for all those who bear responsibility in companies.”
Borries von Mueller, Global Head HR, Fresenius Medical Care
“His hands-on experience as an entrepreneur, commercial pilot, and communications expert make this book so exciting.”
Michael Baumann, Managing Director, MTU South Africa

You’ve got yourself a startup! But now where’s the funding going to come from?In this day and age, creating a startup seems to be an easy process. After some meetings with an equally passionate cofounder, you discover you have a creative idea, the outline of a business plan, and a willingness to spend nights and weekends doing really hard work. But most startup founders have never run a company—much less had to secure funding to reach crucial milestones. If you don’t get the funding you need, you may either make progress at a snail’s pace, or you may have to give up altogether. With stakes this high, improving a startup founder’s odds of fundraising successfully—even just a little—can make a huge difference in the outcome of a venture. In this informative and enlightening book, Gordon Daugherty demystifies the fundraising process that takes place during the early phases of a startup’s evolution.Every founder cares about the valuation they will be able to negotiate with investors, and anyone who has attempted fundraising has encountered numerous debates about the valuation they’re asking for. Startup Success dedicates a whole chapter to negotiating valuation, which, in the end, involves a serious combination of art and science to execute effectively.Daugherty’s book serves as a valuable educational and planning tool for use before the fundraising campaign begins and a reference guide for interacting and negotiating with investors after things get underway. Startup Success is written in a logical sequence that follows the general life cycle of planning and executing a successful fundraising campaign. Actionable tips, tricks, and aha realizations will have readers dog-earing pages and highlighting passages for future reference. The author’s own words tell it all: “I decided to write something different that best exploits the gray in my hair and the hard lessons I’ve learned.” Any startup founder, advisor, or angel investor—regardless of their experience level—will come away with improved skills and an increased knowledge base.Gordon Daugherty is a seasoned business executive, entrepreneur, startup advisor, and investor. He has made more than 200 investments in early-stage companies as a venture fund manager and angel investor, and he has been involved in raising more than $80 million in growth and venture capital.

The part of a negotiation that every negotiator wants to get to as quickly as possible is the closing. This is when your prize is insight: the deal that you want is so close that you could almost reach out and touch it. However, it turns out that this is the most dangerous part of a negotiation – it can all slip away from you if you don't know how to navigate the closing correctly.

    What You'll Find Inside:

6 WAYS TO BREAK A NEGOTIATION DEADLOCK (PLUS ONE MORE)
EVERY NEGOTIATION NEEDS A RAP(PORT) STAR!
SUCCEED BY BRINGING THE GHOST WHISPERER TO THE NEGOTIATION
A SALES NEGOTIATOR’S GUIDE TO DEALING WITH A DEADLOCK

Negotiating is a skill that we hone by using it over and over again. Opportunities to practice our negotiating skills come in all shapes and sizes and buying a car is one such event. Another way to get better at this thing that we call negotiating is by watching what other profession negotiators do. Negotiations between businesses and their workers, such as Verizon and the CWA / IBEW or even between two businesses such as EA and Take Two can offer us important learning experiences.

In labor negotiations, it's the balance of power that can often determine which side walks away from the bargaining table with the best deal. Over at Boeing with the large number of different unions that the company has to deal with this has been shown to be true over and over again.

In order to be able to successfully close a negotiation, you need to have built up a strong foundation that will allow you to move the negotiation to a close. This involves building rapport with the other side of the table and also knowing just exactly who is calling the shots for the other side.

Finally, the closing of a negotiation often comes about because of a deadline or perhaps because both parties have reached a deadlock that they can't resolve. In both cases, your ability to get the deal that you want will be at risk. Knowing how to deal with these situations is a core skill that every negotiator needs to master.
