Until the events of 11 July, 1963, rocketed him into the headlines of the national press, Tanky Challenor, was only known in- and admired by- the close-knit circle of friends in the SAS and the Metropolitan Police. He was also known, but only grudgingly admired, by most of the villains in the West End. On that fateful July day, however, a demonstration was staged outside Claridge's Hotel where King Paul and Queen Frederika of Greece were staying. The demonstrating at Queen Frederika's supposedly malign influence on Greek polotics, and one of them was to claim that Challenor had planted a brick on him. In no time the name of Tanky Challenor became a household word. With the help of Alfred Draper, a journalist of many years' experience, Tanky now tells the story of his life from his childhood, through his time in the SAS, where he won a well deserved Military Medal, to his eventual downfall. In no way does he attempt to excuse himself not to pour whitewash over events that have been long established. He simply sets out to explain how it came about that a young man of undoubtable intelligence but limited educational background ended up in a mental home. Now for one moment does he blame the Army, which clearly played a major role in the forming of his character, and his time in which he obviously enjoyed. But when a man is obliged to spend months behind the enemy lines and taught not only to kill but to take pleasure in killing, it is bound to leave some mark on his personality. Tanky leaves the reader to draw his own conclusions from this story which seldom moves at less then a gallop, and is packed, not only with adventure, but also with much wit and shrewd observation.

A stirring account of the heroic World War I exploits and life of Tennessean Alvin C. York. “Reads like a good novel.” —Southern Living In a brief encounter on October 8, 1918, during the Argonne offensive, Alvin C. York killed 25 German soldiers and, almost singlehandedly, effected the capture of 132 others. Returning to the United States the following spring, he received a tumultuous public welcome and a flood of offers from businessmen eager to capitalize on his acclaimed feat. But York, true to his character, went quietly back to his home in the Tennessee mountains, where he spent the remainder of his life working to bring schools and other services to those remote valleys where his neighbors lived. In this definitive biography, David D. Lee goes beyond that single wartime episode, however, to consider its consequences on York’s later life—his efforts, not always successful, to better his mountain community; his involvement in making a motion picture of his life; his difficulties with money and taxes. But Sergeant York is better known as a symbol than as an individual, and in this study Lee connects the man and his life to an American heroic ideal. With his rural background, his refusal to take commercial advantage of his fame, and his simple piety, Alvin York exemplified the traditional values of an agrarian America that was in his own day already receding into the past. He claimed a special place in the hearts of his countrymen, Lee concludes, because his life seemed to show that the virtues of the common man continued to be a vital part of American society.

Escape from Stalag Luft III -...

Jens Müller was one of only three men who successfully escaped from Stalag Luft III in March 1944—the break that later became the basis for the famous film The Great Escape.
Müller was no. 43 of the 76 prisoners of war who managed to escape from the camp (now in Zagan, Poland). Together with Per Bergsland he stowed away on a ship to Gothenburg. The escapees sought out the British consulate and were flown from Stockholm to Scotland. From there they were sent by train to London and shortly afterwards to "Little Norway" in Canada.
Müller's book about his wartime experiences was first published in Norwegian in 1946, titled Tre kom tilbake (Three Came Back). This translation will correct the impression—set by the film and Charles Bronson—that the men who escaped successfully were American and Australian.
In a vivid, informative memoir Müller details what life in the camp was like, how the escapes were planned and executed, and the story of his personal breakout and success reaching the RAF Leuchars base in Scotland.
