From social media star and change-maker Molly Burke, a vulnerable, honest, and darkly humorous memoir on navigating the challenges of being a blind woman in a sighted world

When Molly Burke was four years old, she was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a rare degenerative eye disease that leads to eventual blindness, forcing her to see the world through new eyes—literally. Growing up disabled didn’t stop her from playing sports, becoming a rock-climbing instructor, or winning a beauty pageant, but other people’s narrow perceptions of her held her back.

Years of relentless bullying, toxic work environments, a rodent-infested apartment, and life’s lowest moments were juxtaposed with red carpets, first-class flights, and personal and professional achievements. Throughout her life, Molly has learned to appreciate the duality, and, most importantly, she’s learned the beauty of being unapologetically yourself and standing up for what you truly believe in.

In Unseen, Molly chronicles her journey as a disabled woman, entrepreneur, and entertainer, illuminating what her experiences have taught her and what she hopes others can learn from her hardship and successes. Part memoir, part rallying cry for a more compassionate and empathetic world, Unseen recounts Molly’s life and experiences fighting against the expectations society set for her and, in doing so, helps readers find their own voice, inner strength, and self-acceptance.

If spiritual progress is your goal, then there is no substitute for the word of God. We have intertwined our divine prosperity with physical, financial, and sentimental achievements. We must follow that which is fundamental.
You do not need to know how to think or how to act. Success requires listening to the still small voice of God and following His instructions. What makes things happen is obedience to His Word.
When He asked me to write this, I became His author because He asked me to write what He did when I obeyed.
People asked me to write this book, but I said no, I did not want people to know me, but I wanted them to know the Lord.
One afternoon a friend came over and brought some of her friends I had never met.
I did not know that one of them was a prophetess, and as she began to pray for me, she prophesied that I would finish the book that I had started and that it would give glory to God.
Now, during that time, I was very sick. However, negative thoughts kept me from moving forward and the book forgot me.
So when the prophetess said that the book would give glory to God and not to me, it completely changed my mind.
Many things have also prevented you from moving forward because of the liar, Satan, I learned that fear, twisting the word of God, and telling us the opposite of what God wants for us is the mastermind technique of the devil.
What will result from your listening to God instead of the liar? All things are possible. If I can do it, so can you.
May this book lead you to God's higher plan for you to receive all the blessings that can only come from Him.
God is the Author and I am just the humble vessel, He even gave me the title, I did it His way. All glory to God!

Berkeley, 1972: a hotbed of creativity where painters, filmmakers, musicians, and writers inspire a young poet.

Second-wave feminism, inspired by Gloria Steinem, Bella Abzug, and Betty Friedan is swelling into a tsunami. Women are joining together to change power dynamics in politics, the home, and the workplace.

On election day, Joan Gelfand casts her vote for George McGovern and boards a plane from New York to California. With one introduction to a woman musician, Joan’s journey to become a writer is born. Embraced by a thriving women’s community of artists, filmmakers, musicians, poets, and writers, Joan is encouraged to find her voice.

Mentored by paradigm-changing writers, Joan finds the courage to face her darkest fears through poetry and art, mining the trauma she experienced after losing her father and questioning her Jewish identity. Reminiscent of Paris in the twenties, Greenwich Village in the sixties, and Berlin in the eighties, Berkeley in the seventies was the “it” city of America.

Outside Voices reports the ups and downs of finding one’s way as an artist, living with a women’s band, forging an independent Jewish identity, founding a women’s restaurant, and becoming a published writer and songwriter while exploring the limits of sexuality and spirituality. The story includes road trips to music festivals in the woods, beaches in Mexico, concerts in Southern California, and a retreat in the Pacific Northwest.

A triumphant story of determination and will, Outside Voices is a backstage look at the women’s movement that sets the stage for decades of change. This book is a firsthand look at how the power of community emboldened innovation, social change, and self-discovery.

“Joan Gelfand has written a compelling book about coming of age in Berkeley in the second wave of feminism circa 1970s. Her depth of discovering herself and her world is intense and reveals all the passion and confusion of a sensitive soul grasping at life through politics, sex, and the long road to becoming a writer.”—Geri Spieler, author of Housewife Assassin: The Woman Who Tried to Kill Gerald Ford
