Sinossi

Paulus Orosius was a fifth century Roman historian and a student of Augustine of Hippo. His ‘Seven Books of History against the Pagans’ is a major work that had a great impact on historiography during the period between antiquity and the Middle Ages. It presents an engaging historical narration, focusing on the pagan peoples from the earliest time up until when the author was alive. Orosius’ objective was to compose a work that could prove that Rome’s decadence and its recent sacking by Alaric I was not a result of its conversion to Christianity. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the Classical world, with both English translations and the original Latin texts. This eBook presents Orosius’ ‘Seven Books of History against the Pagans’, with illustrations and an informative introduction. (Version 1)

The Marauders - Standing Up to...

This real-life Western tells the story of how citizens in a small Arizona border town stood up to anti-immigrant militias and vigilantes.

The Marauders uncovers the riveting nonfiction saga of far-right militias terrorizing the border towns of southern Arizona. In one of the towns profiled, Arivaca, rogue militia members killed a man and his nine-year-old daughter in 2009. In response, the residents organized and spent two years trying to push the new militias out through boycotts and by urging local businesses to ban them. The militias and vigilante groups again raised the stakes, spreading Pizzagate-style conspiracy theories alleging that town residents were complicit in child sex trafficking, prompting fears of vigilante violence.

The Marauders flips the standard formula most often applied to stories about immigration and the far right. Too often those stories are told from the perspective of the ones committing the violence. While Strickland doesn't shy away from exploring those dark themes, the far right are not the protagonists of the book. Rather, the people targeted by hate groups, and the individuals who rose up to stop them in their tracks, are the heroes of this dramatic story.

    NPR Great Read of 2016
Author and Guardian US columnist Jessica Valenti has been leading the national conversation on gender and politics for over a decade. Now, in a darkly funny and bracing memoir, Valenti explores the toll that sexism takes from the every day to the existential.
Sex Object explores the painful, funny, embarrassing, and sometimes illegal moments that shaped Valenti’s adolescence and young adulthood in New York City, revealing a much shakier inner life than the confident persona she has cultivated as one of the most recognizable feminists of her generation.
In the tradition of writers like Joan Didion and Mary Karr, this literary memoir is sure to shock those already familiar with Valenti’s work and enthrall those who are just finding it.
“Jessica Valenti is a breath of fresh air. She offers the kind of raw honesty that can feel like a punch in the gut, but leaves you with the warmth of a deep embrace.” — Ms. Magazine
“One of the most visible and successful feminists of her generation.”  — Washington Post
“A gutsy young third wave feminist.” — The New York Times

    Hidden Mercy - AIDS Catholics...

The 1980s and 1990s, the height of the AIDS crisis in the United States, was decades ago now, and many of the stories from this time remain hidden: A Catholic nun from a small Midwestern town packs up her life to move to New York City, where she throws herself into a community under assault from HIV and AIDS. A young priest sees himself in the many gay men dying from AIDS and grapples with how best to respond, eventually coming out as gay and putting his own career on the line. A gay Catholic with HIV loses his partner to AIDS and then flees the church, focusing his energy on his own health rather than fight an institution seemingly rejecting him.

Set against the backdrop of the HIV and AIDS epidemic of the late twentieth century and the Catholic Church's crackdown on gay and lesbian activists, journalist Michael O'Loughlin searches out the untold stories of those who didn't look away, who at great personal cost chose compassion.

This is one journalist's—gay and Catholic himself—compelling picture of those quiet heroes who responded to human suffering when so much of society told them to look away. These pure acts of compassion and mercy offer us hope and inspiration as we continue to confront existential questions about what it means to be Americans, Christians, and human beings responding to those most in need.

This volume explores how devastating plagues, ambitious trade networks, and long-standing wars defined a darker, yet transformative, side of the Middle Ages.
Start with The Black Death, the infamous pandemic that swept across Europe and Asia in the 14th century, killing millions and leaving entire cities and economies in ruin. The plague reshaped societies, led to labor shortages, and sparked deep religious and cultural shifts that altered the trajectory of history.
Next, explore The Hanseatic League, a powerful commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds and market towns in Northwestern and Central Europe. While it brought prosperity and trade connections, it also exposed cities to disease, piracy, and political tensions, showing the complex balance between wealth and vulnerability.
Finally, uncover The Byzantine-Sassanian Wars, a series of intense military conflicts between the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) and Persian (Sassanian) empires. These prolonged wars exhausted both empires, disrupted trade routes, and made the region vulnerable to later invasions and upheaval, particularly the rise of Islam.
Together, these three stories illuminate how interconnected the medieval world was—how disease could travel along trade routes, how commerce brought both wealth and danger, and how war weakened even the mightiest of empires.
