Sinossi

In this thought-provoking and insightful book, we embark on a captivating journey into the world of writing, exploring its myriad facets and profound impact on human society. Through the lens of accomplished authors, we delve into the creative process, uncovering the secrets behind their inspiration, their struggles, and their triumphs.

We witness the birth of groundbreaking ideas, the transformation of raw emotions into art, and the enduring legacy of words that continue to resonate long after their authors are gone. From the intimate journals of personal reflection to the sweeping narratives that span generations, writing has the power to transport us to different realms, introduce us to unforgettable characters, and challenge our preconceived notions.

Beyond its aesthetic and entertainment value, writing also plays a vital role in shaping public discourse, influencing political and social movements, and preserving cultural heritage. We investigate the power of writing to raise awareness for important issues, challenge injustices, and promote understanding among people from different backgrounds.

Throughout this exploration, we celebrate the indomitable spirit of writers who, armed with nothing more than words, have the ability to change hearts, minds, and the course of history itself. Their words have the power to inspire us, to comfort us, and to remind us of the beauty and complexity of the human experience.

This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the art of writing, the power of storytelling, and the enduring legacy of words. It offers a unique perspective on the creative process, the challenges and rewards of writing, and the profound impact that words can have on our lives and the world around us.

Much has been written about Western intervention during the breakup of Yugoslavia, and whether it made matters worse, prevented worse atrocities, or was simply ineffective. In early 1992, however, what was clear was that Europe was hopelessly divided over the best course of action to take towards Yugoslavia, and after several years of fighting, the Bosnian War was one of the most violent conflagrations in Europe since the end of World War II.
Depending on the source, many authors have focused on different catalysts for Yugoslavia’s demise, but Vesna Drapac may have succinctly summed the situation up when he wrote that by the end, the state “lacked a reason to exist.” There is certainly something in this sentiment, but the disintegration came at an enormous cost.
Given what happened in Yugoslavia, it should be little surprise that Bosnia did not have its fully-established borders until the 19th century, and even in modern times, in many respects the people distinguished and defined Bosnia as a polity more than its shifting borders, and regardless of whether Bosnia operated as an independent state or kingdom. It was during the Middle Ages that Bosnia’s culture and ethnic makeup truly began to coalesce, despite the politically rocky nature of the era in the Balkans.

    • What will make a human being change, deeply, fundamentally, radically?
    • Will I, as a human being, give up my egocentric activity completely?
    • The more knowledge I have acquired, as I have evolved, as I have grown, as I
have experienced, it has strengthened me, and I have been walking on that path for millennia. Perhaps I may have to look at this problem totally differently - which is not to walk on that path at all; discard all knowledge I have acquired.
    • Explanations have been the boat on which to cross to the other shore. The man on the other shore says there is no boat. Cross!

The instant bestseller from Djamila Ribeiro that sparked a major Black feminist movement in Brazil

In a society shaped by the legacies of enslavement, white supremacy, and sexism, who has the right to a voice? In this elegant essay, Djamila Ribeiro offers a compelling intervention into contemporary discussions of power and identity: the concept of "speaking place." A crucial component of conversations on race and gender in Brazil, speaking place is the idea that everyone has a social position in the world and that what we are able to say, and how it is received by others, depends on it. Ribeiro traces the history of Black feminist thought through several centuries, examining the ways that Black women have been silenced, ignored, and punished for speaking.

Building on feminist standpoint theory, and in conversation with the works of Sojourner Truth, bell hooks, Audre Lorde, and others, Ribeiro invites all of us to recognize where we stand, to imagine geographies different from those we've inherited, and to speak a more humane world into being.

Not surprisingly, German unity in 1871 caused geopolitical ripples that reverberated for decades. Other larger European powers, such as Britain, France, and Russia, came to feel threatened by the rise of Germany. These tensions were still prevalent at the outbreak of World War I in 1914, and it became even more important in World War II. In part this was because Germany also became an economic powerhouse, fundamentally altering the global economy. Alongside the rapid expansion of the United States, trade went through a transformation that still has ramifications today.
Germany's defeat in World War I brought about the Weimar Republic, but Weimar has since become a byword for a failed, tragic, political experiment. The official period of its existence, 1919-1933, marked the interwar years in Germany and their related uncertainty, chaos, and the state’s ultimate collapse. Historians have found the roots of Nazism embedded in the Weimar years and that in the final analysis, Weimar politicians voluntarily handed over power to the man who wrought destruction on an epic scale, Adolf Hitler. This set the German nation irrevocably on the path towards World War II. That war would plunge much of the planet into an existential battle that ultimately cost an estimated 60 million lives.
