  I decided to write this book after having written several books on the applications of Taoism in different areas. The applications of Taoism are broad. For everything that has been written, it remains poorly understood. There are several reasons for this. I have practiced Taoism for most of my life. I studied under a Taoist Master and spent many years in a temple. I have read a great deal on the subject. I have discovered that most of what is written is unclear and, in many cases, misleading. Having practiced Taoism for most of my life, I live the Tao, and I have helped others to live it. The reason why it's so difficult to describe Tao because people are attempting to do so through the lens of cognitive understanding and science. The Taoist perspective is completely different, so it does not lend itself well to be described through science or logic. In attempting to cast Taoism in terms of logic or science, most of what makes it unique and effective is lost.. To understand the Tao, you need to live it. 
  I teach aspects of this system to individuals and businesses. On the surface, the system is simple and fundamental. For this reason, many people are tempted to pass it off as being nothing more than insubstantial fluff. However, Taoism is much more than this. I will attempt in this book to explain what Taoism is. I will explain its different perspectives, how to experience it, and how to use it as a functional tool. Within this book and the second one, I will also teach many skills and techniques to develop your Taoist insight. This will help you operate more effectively within the world around you. 
  I will teach you how to use it to make pragmatic changes in your life. It can also be applied to improving business skills and other applications within your jobs or careers. Its applications can span creativity to the organization.

  On Liberty is a philosophical essay by the English philosopher John Stuart Mill. Published in 1859, it applies Mill's ethical system of utilitarianism to society and state. Mill suggests standards for the relationship between authority and liberty. He emphasizes the importance of individuality, which he considers prerequisite to the higher pleasures—the summum bonum of utilitarianism. Furthermore, Mill asserts that democratic ideals may result in the tyranny of the majority. Among the standards proposed are Mill's three basic liberties of individuals, his three legitimate objections to government intervention, and his two maxims regarding the relationship of the individual to society.On Liberty was a greatly influential and well-received work. Some classical liberals and libertarians have criticized it for its apparent discontinuity with Utilitarianism, and vagueness in defining the arena within which individuals can contest government infringements on their personal freedom of action. The ideas presented in On Liberty have remained the basis of much political thought. It has remained in print since its initial publication. A copy of On Liberty is passed to the president of the British Liberal Democrats as a symbol of office.Utilitarianism is a classic exposition and defence of utilitarianism in ethics. The essay first appeared as a series of three articles published in Fraser's Magazine in 1861; the articles were collected and reprinted as a single book in 1863.  Mill's aim in the book is to explain what utilitarianism is, to show why it is the best theory of ethics, and to defend it against a wide range of criticisms and misunderstandings.   This is a collection of what I feel are some of the most important social/cognitive psychology experiments, studies, demonstrations, biases, and systematic reviews, presented in an entertaining way while adhering to academic standards. 
   
  I have always been fascinated by how our behaviors, cognition (thoughts), and affect (how we feel) are greatly dependent upon our social environment and our imperfect brains. I find it fascinating--perhaps because I am an American who was raised in the typical American cultural environment where I learned that what we consider "the self" consists of some magic "soul" that defines who we are—our behaviors (including choices and decisions), our cognition (including thoughts and beliefs), and our feelings. This could not be further from the truth. "We" are a result of an often incomprehensible interaction between biology and environment where some traits are more greatly influenced by social factors than others. Who we are is a result of social forces—the influence of other people and the human-created systems in which we operate. We can ignore this fact, maintain an illusion of control, or face reality and learn how to navigate this world and come out on top—personally, professionally, and financially. I choose the latter. 
   
  My name is Bo Bennett, and I hold a PhD in social psychology with a passion for this subject. While this book is not about me, my interpretations and commentary do make up most of the sections of each entry based on the content written by the original authors of the research or other sources—each of which will be cited when used.
