  John Stuart Mill, a British philosopher and political economist, remains one of the most influential thinkers of the 19th century. Born in 1806, Mill was exposed to rigorous intellectual training from an early age, particularly through his father, James Mill, a prominent utilitarian philosopher. This early exposure shaped Mill's understanding of the world, leading him to become a key figure in the development of utilitarianism, a moral theory that evaluates actions based on their ability to promote the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. 
  Mill’s contribution to utilitarianism was both a continuation and a refinement of the ideas originally proposed by Jeremy Bentham, his intellectual predecessor. While Bentham’s version of utilitarianism focused primarily on the quantity of pleasure or pain produced by an action, Mill introduced a more nuanced view by distinguishing between higher and lower pleasures. According to Mill, pleasures of the intellect, imagination, and moral feelings were superior to those of mere physical satisfaction. This distinction between qualitative pleasures was central to Mill’s revision of utilitarian thought, emphasizing that the quality of happiness mattered as much as, if not more than, its quantity. 
  In this chapter, we explore the foundations of utilitarianism as laid out by Mill. He argued that the ultimate goal of human life is to achieve happiness, which can be defined as the presence of pleasure and the absence of pain. Mill believed that utilitarianism provided a clear and objective standard by which to judge actions, policies, and societal practices. The greatest happiness principle, which advocates for actions that maximize overall happiness, is a central tenet of Mill’s ethical framework. However, Mill also recognized the complexity of applying this principle in real-life situations, acknowledging the challenges of balancing individual rights with the greater good.

Shortly after this awful discovery, Julie Kabat’s beloved brother Luke arrived as a volunteer for the Mississippi Summer Project. Teaching biology to Freedom School students in Meridian, Luke became one of more than seven hundred student volunteers who joined experienced Black civil rights workers and clergy to challenge white supremacy in the nation’s most segregated state. During his time in Mississippi, Luke helped plan the community memorial service for Chaney, attended the Democratic National Convention in support of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, and even spent time in jail for “contributing to the delinquency of minors.” This arrest followed his decision to take students out for ice cream. Through his activism, Luke grappled with many issues that continue to haunt and divide us today: racialized oppression, threats of violence, and segregation whether explicit in law or implicit through custom.Sadly, Luke died just two years after Freedom Summer, leaving behind copious letters, diaries, and essays, as well as a lasting impact on his younger sister, nicknamed “Pig.” Drawing on a wealth of primary resources, especially her brother’s letters and diaries, Kabat delves deep into her family history to understand Luke’s motivations for joining the movement and documents his experiences as an activist. In addition to Luke’s personal narrative, Kabat includes conversations with surviving Freedom School volunteers and students who declare the life-long legacy of Freedom Summer. A sister’s tribute to her brother, Love Letter from Pig: My Brother’s Story of Freedom Summer addresses ongoing issues of civil rights and racial inequality facing the nation today.

  Lieutenant General James Gavin, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division during WWII, is one of the best-known figures of the war. Beginning as the commander of the 505th Parachute Combat Team that spearheaded the American assault on Sicily in July 1943, Gavin advanced to division command and finally command of US forces in Berlin. He kept a wartime diary that starts in April 1943, as the unit was preparing to go to northern Africa and continues through to his final entry on September 1, 1945, during the occupation of Berlin.

His diary includes observations on fellow military and political leaders, army operations, and the general's personal life.   For decades, Gavin kept the existence of the journal a secret; the general's family discovered it among his belongings after his death. Editor Lewis "Bob" Sorley has worked closely with the Gavin family and the Army Heritage Center to prepare the diary for publication. His edited and annotated version includes a prologue and epilogue to frame the entries within the wider scope of the general's life.
