Beschreibung

In this thought-provoking book, Pasquale De Marco delves into the dark side of democracy, exploring the ways in which it can lead to tyranny, injustice, and even totalitarianism. Drawing on historical examples and contemporary case studies, the author argues that democracy is not always the guarantor of freedom and prosperity that we often believe it to be.The book begins by examining the historical roots of totalitarianism, tracing its evolution from ancient Greece to the modern era. The author then explores the social, economic, and psychological conditions that give rise to totalitarianism, and examines the role of ideology in its development. Finally, the author considers the challenges that democracy faces in the 21st century, and discusses the ways in which we can strengthen democracy and prevent it from falling prey to totalitarianism. One of the most important contributions of this book is its analysis of the ways in which democracy can be subverted from within. The author shows how democratic institutions can be manipulated by demagogues and other authoritarian leaders to suppress dissent and consolidate power. The book also examines the role of propaganda and mass media in creating a climate of fear and conformity that can make it difficult for democracy to function properly. This book is a timely and important contribution to our understanding of democracy and its discontents. It is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the challenges facing democracy today and how we can overcome them.If you like this book, write a review!

Lebanon is often described as “the most successful failed state of the 21st century”. This irony perfectly describes the reality of the country, which harbors vital forces and remarkable economic and cultural potential, but which suffers from extreme and inextricable violence.
This book, which reads like a thriller, traces this turbulent history since the 19th century: that of a country condemned to constant struggle, constantly buffeted by external interventions, from the Ottomans to the Iranians, via the Syrians, the Israelis, the British and the Americans, not forgetting France, which continues to play a pre-eminent role.
Although Lebanon, the gateway to the Middle East and hostage to international rivalries, has managed, despite everything, to survive, and, like Sisyphus, to heal its internal dissensions in order to constantly climb back up the slope, it has nevertheless been hit in recent years by a succession of unprecedented crises, with a financial and economic collapse that has brought the country to its knees, This has been compounded by a huge influx of Syrian migrants fleeing the war in their homeland, equivalent to half the Lebanese population, and topped off by a particularly destructive confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah, which has ravaged whole swathes of Lebanon.
What are the possible solutions for Lebanon's future? What scenarios are on the horizon? These are the answers that this book also seeks to provide.

The word Upanishad (upa-ni-shad) consists of, "Upa" means "near;" "ni" means "down;" "shad" means "to sit." Thus, Upanishad is to sit down near the teacher to discuss, learn, practice, and experience. There are some 200 or more Upanishads. Some are lost and are only known about because of being referenced in other Upanishads. Most of the Upanishads were kept secret for centuries, only passed on to others orally in the form of Shlokas (a category of verse line developed from the Vedic Anustubh meter). The B?hadara?yaka Upanishad (Sanskrit: ?????????? ???????) is one of the oldest, mukhya (primary) Upanishads. It is contained within the Shatapatha Brahmana (Brahmana is a collection of ancient Indian texts with commentaries on the Vedas.), which is itself a part of Shukla Yajur Veda. Brihad means great. Aryanka (Snskrit) ?????? means means pertaining to the forest. Aranyaka in the Upanishadic context refers to a treatise to be read or expounded by anchorites in the quiet of the forest. Shankara in his commentary on B?hadara?yaka said that it was “composed for the sake of those who wish to liberate themselves from the world, in order that they may acquire the knowledge that the Absolute Brahman and the individual are the same...A knowledge by which the liberation from the cause of the world is accomplished.” Brihadaranyaka Upanishad is estimated to have been composed about 700 BCE.The 11 principal Upanishads to which Sankara appeals in his great commentary on the Vedanta-Surtras are: Chandogya, Talavakara or Kena, Aitareya, Kaushitaki, Vajasaneyi or Isha, Katha, Mundaka, Taittirtiyaka or Taittiriya, Brihadaranyaka, Svetasvatara, and Prasna. They are also called the 11 classical Upanishads or the fundamental Upanishads of the Vedanta Philosophy. Apart from these, Maitrayana-Brahmana-Upanishad is also considered as an important Upanishad. The Upanishadic literature is not a religious scripture and is free from dogma and doctrines. It is not a part of any religion but is a philosophy for all times and for all. German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, impressed by the Upanishads, called the texts "the production of the highest human wisdom". Summary by Jothi.

    Being Cosmopolitan - A Political...

What does it mean to be cosmopolitan? Typically, cosmopolitanism is understood as a broad moral orientation, involving some kind of commitment to global moral equality. On this understanding, to be cosmopolitan is simply to evidence that moral orientation oneself. By contrast, Being Cosmopolitan takes up a thoroughly political approach. The focus is on what it might mean, and what it is like, to be political in a distinctly cosmopolitan form. What it means to be cosmopolitan in this thoroughly political sense cannot involve appeal to any particular moral orientation, because politics is about, inter alia, the contestation of such orientations and commitments. Instead, this book offers an account that is based upon the internalization of particular kind of global "social imaginary," involving the imagination of a global public to which certain issues—or global public affairs—are understood to pertain.

Within which kind of global order is it possible, or comfortable, for a cosmopolitical agent to live? In answer to this question, the book argues against the viability of both a world of self-determining peoples, and of "pluralist" global visions—both of which are popular with moral cosmopolitan theorists.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
In the turbulent seventeenth century, amidst civil wars, revolutions, and religious disputes, John Locke became one of the minds that best understood — and best discussed — the price of authority and the value of liberty. This book traces his life and work from within: his formation, his medical-scientific turn, his proximity to power, exile, and the writing that established him as the father of modern empiricism and liberal thought. This ninth instalment also explores his grey areas: the limits of his tolerance, the centrality of property, and the uncomfortable part of colonialism. The result is a complete portrait of a thinker we continue to use to think about the present, precisely because his lights and shadows still challenge us.
