After centuries of division, China experienced an extraordinary renaissance through three dynasties that elevated the empire to unprecedented heights of cultural brilliance and global influence. "Flourishing Chinese Empires: Art, Trade, and Power" examines the Sui, Tang, and Song dynasties—a golden age when China stood as the world's most advanced civilization.
The short-lived Sui Dynasty (581-618 CE) accomplished the crucial task of reunification through ambitious projects including the Grand Canal, standardized administration, and reformed examination system. Though bankrupted by these massive undertakings and unsuccessful military campaigns, the Sui created the essential foundation for the glory that followed.
The Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE) transformed this unified state into a cosmopolitan empire of unrivaled splendor. China's borders expanded dramatically while its capital at Chang'an became the world's largest and most sophisticated city—a multicultural metropolis where Persian merchants, Japanese monks, and Korean scholars mingled in bustling markets and elegant gardens. This was the era of China's greatest poets, its artistic zenith in sculpture and painting, and unprecedented openness to foreign influences.
The Song Dynasty (960-1279 CE) compensated for military vulnerability with stunning economic and technological advancement. Urbanization accelerated as printing spread literacy, commerce flourished through paper money, maritime trade expanded, and scientific innovation thrived. Though constantly threatened by powerful northern neighbors, the Song fostered a refined cultural environment where landscape painting, philosophical inquiry, and scholarly pursuits reached remarkable sophistication.

The origins of the Crusades lie in a complex blend of religious fervor, political ambition, and cultural conflict that took shape in the late 11th century. At the heart of the movement was a passionate desire by Christian Europe to reclaim the Holy Land—particularly Jerusalem—from Muslim control. For centuries, Jerusalem had held sacred meaning for Christians, Jews, and Muslims alike. However, by the late 11th century, it was under the rule of the Seljuk Turks, who had taken control of large parts of the eastern Mediterranean, including important Christian pilgrimage routes.
The political climate of Europe during this period also played a significant role. Feudalism was the dominant system, and many nobles were constantly embroiled in local power struggles. At the same time, the Church had become the most powerful institution in Europe. It was in this context that Pope Urban II made a historic call to action in 1095 at the Council of Clermont. Responding to an appeal from Byzantine Emperor Alexios I for military assistance against the Seljuks, the pope called on Western Christians to take up arms and march to the East. His speech stirred a wave of religious enthusiasm, as he promised absolution of sins and eternal salvation to those who joined the cause.
This call ignited a massive response. Men from all walks of life—knights, peasants, and even children—began preparing for what would become known as the First Crusade. For many, the Crusades were not only a spiritual mission but also a chance for adventure, wealth, and social mobility. The idea of fighting in the name of God merged with more worldly motives, creating a powerful and often contradictory force.

Leah Myers may be the last member of the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe in her family line, due to her tribe's strict blood quantum laws. In this unflinching and intimate memoir, Myers excavates the stories of four generations of women in order to leave a record of her family. Beginning with her great-grandmother, the last full-blooded Native member in their lineage, she connects each woman with her totem to construct her family's totem pole: protective Bear, defiant Salmon, compassionate Hummingbird, and perched on top, Raven.

As she pieces together their stories, Myers weaves in tribal folktales, the history of the Native genocide, and Native mythology. She tells the larger story of how, as she puts it, her "culture is being bleached out," offering sharp vignettes of her own life between White and Native worlds: her naïve childhood love for Pocahontas, her struggles with the Klallam language, the violence she faced at the hands of a close White friend as a teenager.

Crisp and powerful, Thinning Blood is at once a bold reclamation of one woman's identity and a searingly honest meditation on heritage, family, and what it means to belong.

The Jewish scriptures, known collectively as the Tanakh, serve as the foundation of Jewish religious and cultural identity. These sacred texts, developed over centuries, provide insight into the beliefs, laws, and traditions that have shaped Jewish communities. The origins of these scriptures trace back to ancient Israel, where oral traditions and early writings formed the basis of what would become the Hebrew Bible.
The Torah, also known as the Five Books of Moses, is the most revered section of Jewish scripture. It is believed to have been divinely revealed to Moses on Mount Sinai and encompasses the laws, history, and ethical teachings central to Judaism. The Torah consists of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, each of which outlines the early history of the Israelites and their covenant with God. These texts were initially passed down through oral tradition before being written and compiled into a unified body of scripture.
In addition to the Torah, other ancient Hebrew texts played a significant role in shaping Jewish scripture. The writings of the Prophets (Nevi’im) and the sacred poetry and wisdom literature found in the Writings (Ketuvim) were added over time. The historical context of these texts reflects the struggles, triumphs, and spiritual evolution of the Jewish people. The Book of Judges and the Books of Kings, for example, document the rise and fall of Israelite leaders, while the Psalms offer poetic expressions of devotion and supplication.
