Sinossi

In the annals of English history, few monarchs have captured the imagination and admiration of their subjects and posterity alike as Queen Elizabeth I. Her reign, spanning the latter half of the 16th century, was a time of unprecedented prosperity, exploration, and cultural flourishing, earning it the moniker "The Golden Age."

This captivating book delves into the life and reign of Elizabeth I, shedding light on the factors that shaped her character, her motivations, and her remarkable achievements. From her tumultuous childhood, marked by her mother's execution and her uncertain upbringing, to her ascent to the throne amidst religious strife and political instability, Elizabeth's journey is a testament to her resilience, intelligence, and unwavering determination.

Through the pages of this book, readers will witness Elizabeth's transformation from a young princess to a powerful and respected monarch. They will explore the intricacies of her religious policies, which sought to balance the delicate equilibrium between Catholicism and Protestantism, and her skillful navigation of international relations, which saw England emerge as a dominant force on the global stage.

The book also delves into Elizabeth's personal life, shedding light on her complex relationships with her courtiers, her advisors, and the various suitors who sought her hand in marriage. It examines the challenges she faced as a female ruler in a male-dominated world and the ways in which she subverted expectations and wielded power in a patriarchal society.

Beyond the political and historical narrative, this book also explores the cultural and artistic flourishing that characterized the Elizabethan era. Readers will gain insights into the vibrant literary scene, the flourishing theater, and the exquisite music that defined this remarkable period. The book also highlights Elizabeth's own role as a patron of the arts and her profound influence on the development of English culture.

This comprehensive and engaging book is a must-read for anyone interested in English history, the Tudor dynasty, or the life and legacy of one of the most iconic monarchs in history. It offers a fresh perspective on Elizabeth I's reign, shedding light on her motivations, her achievements, and the enduring impact she had on England and the world.

Between the 1870s and 1930s, American social reformers, working closely with the US government, transformed sexual vice into an international political and humanitarian concern. As these activists worked to eradicate prostitution and trafficking, they promoted sexual self-control for both men and women as a cornerstone of civilization and a basis of American exceptionalism. Empire of Purity traces the history of these efforts, showing how the policing and penalization of sexuality was used to justify American interventions around the world.

Eva Payne describes how American reformers successfully pushed for international anti-trafficking agreements that mirrored US laws, calling for states to criminalize prostitution and restrict migration, and harming the very women they claimed to protect. She argues that Americans' ambitions to reshape global sexual morality and law advanced an ideology of racial hierarchy that viewed women of color, immigrants, and sexual minorities as dangerous vectors of disease.

Drawing on archives in Europe, the United States, and Latin America, Empire of Purity ties the war on sexual vice to American imperial ambitions and a politicization of sexuality that continues to govern both domestic and international policy today.

From the “Trail of Tears” to Wounded Knee and Little Bighorn, the narrative of American history is incomplete without the inclusion of the Native Americans that lived on the continent before European settlers arrived in the 16th and 17th centuries. Since the first contact between natives and settlers, tribes like the Sioux, Cherokee, and Navajo have both fascinated and perplexed outsiders with their history, language, and culture.
At the same time, when European settlers and later American settlers came into contact with Native American tribes on the continent, they were frequently unable to differentiate between the subcultures within individual tribes, leading to all kinds of misunderstandings. When the Spanish came into contact with different tribes in the Southwest, they categorized several of them as Pueblo. Thus, while most Americans have heard of the Pueblo and Navajo, many remain unfamiliar with distinctions within the tribes.
The Pueblo fascinated those who came across their settlements, especially those located in desert regions and the sides of cliffs that involved the use of adobe mud, stone, carving homes out of cliffs. The Navajo are one of the most famous tribes in the United States, even though many of the important events in the people’s history have been overlooked with the passage of time. Still one of the biggest Native American groups in America, the Navajo are typically associated with the Southwest and other tribes like the Pueblo, and they are popularly remembered for the Code Talkers of World War II.
Among all the Native American tribes, the Spanish, Mexicans, and Americans learned the hard way that the warriors of the Apache were perhaps the fiercest in North America. Based in the Southwest, the Apache fought all three in Mexico and the American Southwest, engaging in seasonal raids for so many centuries that the Apache struck fear into the hearts of all their neighbors.

Henry Lee learnt to ride before he was five, joined Washington's Army at nineteen, and was appointed Captain of the Fifth Troop of Virginia Dragoons at twenty. At twenty-two, Colonel Lee took command of a mixed cavalry and infantry unit known as "Lee's Legion"—the finest offensive team in the Continental Army. Nicknamed "Light-Horse Harry" for his raids on British supply wagons, the young Virginian quickly earned a reputation for horsemanship and distinguished himself as one of the most skilled and courageous cavalry officers of the American Revolution.

After the war Lee served in the Virginia legislature, in Congress, in the Virginia Convention of 1788 that ratified the federal Constitution, and as governor of the state. His political career was interrupted while he commanded the Army to put down the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794. From 1799 to 1801 he served in the House of Representatives.

Noel B. Gerson charts the triumphs and tragedies of one of the nation's most distinguished citizens, whose rise to fame was overshadowed by bankruptcy, imprisonment, and injuries he received from an angry mob. Drawing on a wealth of contemporary sources, including private correspondence and Lee's own published memoirs, Gerson masterfully portrays a dedicated patriot and natural-born soldier, a trait he passed on to his son, General Robert E. Lee.
