In this captivating exploration of the Aztec Empire, we journey through the heart of an ancient civilization, uncovering the secrets of Tenochtitlan, the Templo Mayor, and the Aztec people. Through the lens of archaeology, history, and culture, we unravel the intricate tapestry of Aztec life, revealing their remarkable achievements and the enduring legacy they left behind.

From the rise of Tenochtitlan to its tragic fall, we delve into the political machinations, religious beliefs, and social structures that shaped Aztec society. We witness the architectural grandeur of the Templo Mayor, a sacred space that served as the center of the Aztec universe, and we explore the complex rituals and ceremonies that took place within its walls.

We encounter the enigmatic Aztec rulers, from the legendary Moctezuma II to the ill-fated Cuauhtémoc, and we learn about their strategies for maintaining power and expanding their empire. We also encounter the everyday lives of the Aztec people, from the farmers and artisans to the merchants and priests, gaining insights into their hopes, fears, and aspirations.

Through archaeological discoveries and historical accounts, we piece together the story of the Aztec Empire, from its humble beginnings to its dramatic downfall. We examine the factors that contributed to its rise, including its military prowess, its efficient system of government, and its sophisticated infrastructure. We also explore the reasons for its eventual collapse, including the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors and the devastating impact of European diseases.

But the legacy of the Aztecs extends far beyond their physical empire. Their art, architecture, and culture continue to inspire and fascinate people around the world. In this book, we explore the ways in which the Aztec Empire has been represented in popular culture, from films and television shows to video games and music. We also discuss the challenges and opportunities facing Aztec studies today, and the importance of preserving and promoting this rich cultural heritage.

World War II was the largest and most violent armed conflict in the history of mankind. Highly relevant today, World War II has much to teach us, not only about the profession of arms, but also about military preparedness, global strategy, and combined operations in the coalition war against fascism. This book follows military operations of the US Army in China from 4 July 1942 to 4 May 1945.
The China Theater of Operations more resembled the Soviet-German war on the Eastern Front than the war in the Pacific or the war in Western Europe. On the Asian continent, as on the Eastern Front, an Allied partner, China, carried the brunt of the fighting. China had been at war with Japan since 1937 and continued the fight until the Japanese surrender in 1945. The United States advised and supported China's ground war, while basing only a few of its own units in China for operations against Japanese forces in the region and Japan itself. The primary American goal was to keep the Chinese actively in the Allied war camp, thereby tying down Japanese forces that otherwise might be deployed against the Allies fighting in the Pacific. The United States and Nationalist China succeeded in forging a coalition that withstood the tests of time. Indeed, Chinese leader Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, the Allied Supreme Commander, China Theater, accepted, though reluctantly, U.S. Army generals as his chiefs of staff. This command relationship also endured differences in national war aims and cultures, as well as personalities, until the end of the war. The original policies of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall succeeded—China stayed in the war and prevented sizable numbers of Japanese troops from deploying to the Pacific.

An astonishing window into the inner world of plants, and the cutting-edge science in plant intelligence.

Decades of research document plants' impressive abilities: they communicate with one another, manipulate other species, and move in sophisticated ways. Lesser known, however, is the new evidence that plants may actually be sentient. Although plants may not have brains, their microscopic commerce exposes a system not unlike the neuronal networks running through our own bodies. They can learn and remember, possessing an intelligence that allows them to behave in adaptive, flexible, anticipatory, and goal-directed ways.

A leading figure in the philosophy of plant signaling and behavior, Paco Calvo offers an entirely new perspective on plant biology. In Planta Sapiens, he shows for the first time how we can use tools developed in animal cognition studies in a quest to deeply understand plant intelligence. He illuminates how plants inspire technological advancements: from robotics and AI to tackling the ecological crisis. Most importantly, he demonstrates that plants are neither objects nor resources; they are agents in themselves, and for themselves.

"A truly amazing portrayal of the technical, the emotional, and the courageous. Macy puts the reader in the cockpit of our most lethal attack platform." —Dick Couch, New York Times bestselling author

Apache is the incredible true story of Ed Macy, a decorated Apache helicopter pilot, that takes you inside one of the world's most dangerous war machines. A firsthand account of the exhilaration and ferocity of war, Apache chronicles a rescue mission involving a stranded soldier in Afghanistan in 2007.

Ed Macy had always dreamed of a career in the army, so when the British Army Air Corps launched its attack helicopter program, Macy bent every rule in the book to make sure he was the first to sign up to fly the Apache—the deadliest, most technically advanced helicopter in the world and the toughest to fly. In 2007, Macy's Apache squadron was dispatched to Afghanistan's notorious Helmand Province with the mission to fight alongside and protect the men on the ground by any means necessary. When a marine goes missing in action, Macy and his team know they are the Army's only hope of bringing him back alive. Apache is Macy's story—an adrenalin-fueled account of one of the most daring actions of modern wartime, and a tale of courage, danger, and comradeship you won't be able to put down.

With the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, the U.S. war in Vietnam ended, but the refugee crisis was only beginning. Decades later, Nguyen goes looking for the story of his father. What he discovers is a sea of questions drifting above sunken truths. Explore the folklore of the trickster, villain, and rescuer known as Baba Yaga in a new light. “With Becoming Baba Yaga, Kris Spisak presents a robust work of scholarship. Baba Yaga is a wily shapeshifter, nearly impossible to pin down—but Spisak miraculously transforms alongside her, ever keeping up.” —from the foreword by GennaRose Nethercott, bestselling author of Thistlefoot   When darkness, fear, and instability inundate our daily lives, folktale figures like Baba Yaga speak to the dichotomy of our existence—the hope and the horror, the magic and the mundane. At once an old hag and an enchantress, a demon and wish granter, a feminist and nothing more than a fairytale, Baba Yaga is an endlessly complex folktale character.  Becoming Baba Yaga provides an in-depth look at the Baba Yaga mythos and history through Slavic folklore. Filled with historical and cultural context, analyses, and the stories themselves that add depth to the conversation. A comprehensive resource for anyone hoping to learn more about this ambiguous character and how her multifaceted presence still ripples through the present day, Becoming Baba Yaga is as thoughtful as it is illuminating.   Spisak explores Baba Yaga’s connection to nature as an Earth goddess and as an herbalist. She also delves into the Shadow Self and Baba Yaga’s aspect as a trickster and places her in a modern context as not merely a witch of the woods but also as an archetype and force for finding your own path. Becoming Baba Yaga shares how she is both a force for good as much as evil and a feminist before her time.
