  One hot summer, two young children disappeared from their first-floor apartment in the Kew Gardens neighborhood of Queens, New York. Their mother, Alice Crimmins, reported them missing to the police. Later that day, the body of four-year-old Missy was found in a vacant lot, showing signs of having been strangled. Recently divorced, with teased red hair and heavy makeup, Alice Crimmins did not fit the maternal ideal held by the predominantly Catholic police detectives on the case. Her every action was scrutinized: Was she behaving like a grief-stricken mother or like a coldhearted killer? After three years of police surveillance, Alice was charged with the murder of her children in 1968 in a highly publicized trial.   The Franco-Prussian War, also known as the Franco-German War or, in France, the War of 1870, was a pivotal conflict between the Second French Empire and the North German Confederation, which was led by the Kingdom of Prussia. This war lasted from 19 July 1870 to 28 January 1871, and its consequences would shape European geopolitics for decades. The primary cause of the war stemmed from France's desire to reaffirm its dominance in continental Europe, which had been seriously challenged after Prussia's decisive victory over Austria in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. This defeat shifted the balance of power in Europe, making France anxious about its standing. 
  Historians have debated the exact motivations behind the war, particularly regarding the role of Otto von Bismarck, the Prussian chancellor. Some argue that Bismarck intentionally provoked France into declaring war to unite the southern German states—Baden, Württemberg, Bavaria, and Hesse-Darmstadt—under the North German Confederation. Other historians maintain that Bismarck exploited the situation as it developed, recognizing the potential for new alliances but not necessarily seeking war. Regardless of the intent, Bismarck saw the war as an opportunity to strengthen German unity. 
  The war officially began when France mobilized its army on 15 July 1870, prompting the North German Confederation to follow suit with its own mobilization the same day. On 16 July, the French parliament declared war on Prussia, and by 2 August, France had invaded German territory. The German coalition responded swiftly and efficiently, invading northeastern France on 4 August. The Germans had several advantages: superior numbers, better training, more effective leadership, and access to advanced military technology, especially in railways and artillery.

Through elaborate ceremonies, processions, and offerings, Egyptians demonstrated their devotion while reinforcing the cosmic order, known as Ma’at. 
  Religion was deeply woven into the fabric of daily life, and festivals provided opportunities for the people to express their reverence for the gods beyond routine temple rituals. Many celebrations coincided with agricultural cycles, aligning the will of the gods with the prosperity of the land. The inundation of the Nile, for example, was both a natural and a divine event, prompting rituals to honor deities like Hapi, the god of the flood. The timing of major festivals was often determined by celestial events, linking human activities with the movement of the stars and planets. 
  The pharaoh played a crucial role in these religious festivities, acting as both a political leader and a divine intermediary. He was believed to be the earthly representative of the gods, ensuring the stability of Egypt by maintaining a strong connection with the divine realm. Many ceremonies included the pharaoh making offerings to the gods, participating in processions, or performing symbolic acts to renew his legitimacy and strength. One of the most significant of these was the Sed Festival, a grand event that reaffirmed the ruler’s divine right to govern. Through public participation in such festivals, the people reaffirmed their trust in the pharaoh’s ability to maintain cosmic balance.

  Lord Byron’s very name conjures up visions of the Romantic movement and outlandishly dressed bohemians, for if Alfred, Lord Tennyson was the poetic darling of the masses, Byron was the hero of the hedonists. While the traditional English literary hero was a nobleman rescuing a damsel in distress, Byron created the anti-hero, a man plagued by self-doubt and hidden sorrow. At the same time, his hero was also capable of facing reality once he had wrestled through his own angst, and even of occasionally acting nobly in the great tradition of the author’s Puritan forebears.  
  If Byron himself was eclectic in his tastes and character, his poetry was even more so, for he could feature satiric pieces poking fun at the status quo and historical renditions of ancient battles fought with nobility and valor, all in the same volume. Like so many other writers, he used poetry to explore his own most deeply guarded secrets, in one poem playing in first person the dramatic hero and in another the troubled penitent. He was sometimes funny, sometimes lyrical, and sometimes verbose, but he was always interesting, and that is what allowed him to become one of the most famous writers of all time, almost against his own will, and despite his premature death. 
  	Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace were the first to conceive the notion of a programmable and automatic universal computer, which, on top of its ability to calculate any mathematical equation at an unmatched speed, could also be used for a seemingly infinite number of other applications. In other words, they envisioned the precursor to the modern computer. It was certainly an unusual path for any woman, and she managed to do so before an incredibly premature death. Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, died in 1852 at the age of 36, but during her short and tumultuous life, she was one of the first to recognize that computers could do far more than complex calculations.
