Few events have had a greater impact on human history than the ascension to power of the Nazi Party in Germany in January 1933. This was no coup: the party gained some power via democratic elections, although once it was established, it quickly took absolute control over all aspects of the state. Other parties were outlawed, and further elections were deemed “unnecessary.”
However, Germany’s image as a nation united under one man and committed to expansion through the application of science and technology was in reality an illusion. Nazi Germany was wracked by internal dissent, a chaotic system of rule and a leader who was willing to ignore the economic and resource needs of his nation. By the end of 1941, Germany appeared to be unassailable. Most of its European enemies had either been defeated or seemed to be on the point of defeat. The almost unbroken string of spectacular successes enjoyed by the German Army and air force suggested to many that these were simply unbeatable. Within less than four years, Germany had been utterly defeated, Hitler was dead and Germany itself was occupied by foreign armies.
The factors that led to this sudden and complete collapse had been present from the very beginning of the Nazi regime, but they had been hidden by early success in the face of uncertain and vacillating adversaries. In retrospect, we can clearly see that the fall of the Third Reich was probably inevitable, though it would shake Europe to its foundations, bring about an entirely new world order, and involve the deaths of tens of millions of people.

A defense of the dying art of losing an afternoon—and gaining new appreciation—amidst the bins and shelves of bricks-and-mortar shops.
Written during the pandemic, when the world was marooned at home and consigned to scrolling screens, On Browsing’s essays chronicle what we’ve lost through online shopping, streaming, and the relentless digitization of culture. The latest in the Field Notes series, On Browsing is an elegy for physical media, a polemic in defense of perusing the world in person, and a love letter to the dying practice of scanning bookshelves, combing CD bins, and losing yourself in the stacks.

The Greek War of Independence, which began in 1821, was the culmination of centuries of subjugation under the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Turks had ruled over Greece since the fall of Constantinople in 1453, imposing their control over the Greek-speaking territories of the Eastern Mediterranean. While the Greeks endured under Ottoman rule for nearly four centuries, various socio-political, religious, and economic factors fostered the desire for independence. These factors would eventually fuel a revolution that would reshape Greece’s future and contribute to the broader wave of nationalistic movements across Europe in the 19th century.
The Ottoman Empire's control over Greece was characterized by a rigid hierarchical structure. While Greeks were allowed to practice their religion and maintain certain aspects of their culture, they were treated as second-class citizens, subject to high taxes and military conscription. This created deep resentment and a longing for autonomy. However, resistance to Ottoman rule was sporadic and often crushed by the overwhelming power of the Empire. The Greeks, scattered across various islands and mainland regions, lacked the unity needed to mount an effective challenge to Ottoman authority.
One of the key elements that ignited the desire for Greek independence was the rise of nationalist and revolutionary ideas in Europe during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The French Revolution of 1789 had sparked waves of liberalism and nationalism across the continent, and these ideas reached Greece through intellectuals, students, and traders. The Enlightenment ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity resonated with many Greeks, who saw them as a path toward the freedom they had been denied for centuries.

What is the cost of an education?
Is education an additive process or a reductive one?
How does one weigh the benefits of tradition against the threat of being at odds with the future?
How does one refuse the offer of a better life for their children?
What if the offer is compulsory?
What happens when the tree of knowledge bares rotten fruit?
While the history of Canada's Residential School program is only just beginning
to be unearthed, there are already enough first hand accounts to begin asking
some of these questions. The words of the individuals included in this book
offer just a glimpse of the results of the effort of one group of people to
educate people who were in many cases not seeking the knowledge being
offered. These are tales of lessons learned, languages lost, traditions
    replaced, & charity corrupted.
