Africa is huge and varied, and so is its mythology.
African ideas of how the world began are very different from the story of Genesis. Though the creator god is repeatedly seen as having withdrawn from the world, people often have a very direct and intense relationship with demigods, ancestors, and bush spirits. The entire landscape is permeated by spiritual meanings and inhabited by gods and spirits. While many Africans today formally follow the Christian or Muslim faiths, they often blend these beliefs with traditional lore and rites.
This audiobook examines the central themes of African mythology—the creation, gods and goddesses, trickster tales, animals, monsters, heroes, and mythical rulers—and shows how some motifs recur throughout the corpus of myths. It also looks at how African myths are becoming better known because of writers and filmmakers, particularly from the Black diaspora, who draw on this rich heritage for inspiration.
This introductory guide to African myths will allow you to do the following:Learn why the original creator decided to withdraw from Earth.Find out how ancient Egypt had several different creation stories, depending on which god was in ascendancy at the time.Listen to the medieval African emperor said to have been the richest man in history.Find out where Br’er Rabbit really came from.Check out how Anansi the Spider gained ownership of all the stories in the world.Get to know Oshun, the Yoruba river goddess, and how she arrived in Latin America.Learn about Haile Selassie, the emperor who brought Ethiopia into the League of Nations, and how he became a living god to Jamaican Rastafarians.Understand how Voodoo (Vodou) grew out of traditional West African religion.

"A spectre is haunting Europe—the spectre of communism."

In a world transformed by the Industrial Revolution, Marx and Engels set out to decode the hidden mechanics of society. They argue that all of human history is the history of class struggles: the constant friction between those who own the means of production and those who sell their labor to survive. The Communist Manifesto is a call to action that envisions a future beyond exploitation, predicting the inevitable rise of the working class and the transition to a classless, stateless society. Whether viewed as a historical artifact or a living critique of global economics, this text remains essential for understanding the modern world.

The Great Divide: Bourgeoisie vs. Proletariat: The Manifesto famously defines the two warring camps of the industrial age. The Bourgeoisie (the ruling capitalist class) are described as a revolutionary force that "shattered" feudalism but created a system of "naked self-interest." Opposing them is the Proletariat (the working class), whom Marx describes as the "grave-diggers" of the very system that created them.

The Ten-Point Program: In the second section, the authors lay out a controversial and radical set of measures for the "most advanced countries," including the abolition of private land ownership, a heavy progressive income tax, and the centralization of credit and communication in the hands of the state. These points sparked over a century of political experimentation and debate across every continent.

A Legacy of Global Change: From the revolutions of 1917 to the modern labor movements of the 21st century, the rhetoric of the Manifesto has been used to challenge the status quo. Its closing cry—"Working Men of All Countries, Unite!"—remains one of the most famous slogans in human language, symbolizing the birth of international political solidarity.

The Americans would turn the war in the Pacific around in the middle of 1942, but in the wake of Pearl Harbor and the Japanese invasion of the Philippines, the country was in desperate need of a morale boost, and it would come in the form of the Doolittle Raid. In part to show that the Japanese were not invincible, and in part to reassure the American public that the nation would not lose the war, the Doolittle Raid included both Army and Navy units that launched 16 land-based medium bombers from an aircraft carrier, a feat that was the first of its kind but also one involving a great deal of risk. Getting the bombers and carriers in place to execute the mission involved much strategic planning and cooperation within the American military, and had it failed, it could have dealt a serious blow to the Americans’ Pacific presence due to the nation’s limited resources in that theater.
The first serious air raids over Japan came in November 1944, after the Americans had captured the Marianas Islands, and through February 1945, American bombers concentrated on military targets at the fringes of the city, particularly air defenses. However, the air raids of March 1945, and particularly on the night of March 9, were a different story altogether. In what is generally referred to as strategic or area bombing, waves of bombers flew low over Tokyo for over two and a half hours, dropping incendiary bombs with the intention of producing a massive firestorm. The American raids intended to produce fires that would kill soldiers and civilians, as well as the munitions factories and apartment buildings of those who worked in them. 325 B-29s headed toward Tokyo, and nearly 300 of them dropped bombs on it. Additional raids, this time largely on the north and west, came in April, and in May, raids hit Ginza and the south. Altogether, American bombers flew more than 4,000 missions over Tokyo before surrender.
