Viruses are microscopic entities that exist at the boundary between living and non-living matter. Despite their minuscule size, viruses have a profound impact on all forms of life, from bacteria and plants to humans and animals. They are the most abundant biological entities on Earth, outnumbering bacteria by a factor of ten. Viruses have played a key role in shaping ecosystems, driving evolution, and causing significant diseases in both humans and other organisms.
A virus is fundamentally a small particle, or "virion," composed of genetic material (either DNA or RNA) encased in a protein coat known as a capsid. Some viruses also have an outer lipid membrane called an envelope. Unlike bacteria or other microorganisms, viruses lack the machinery necessary for self-replication and metabolism. Instead, they must infect a host cell to reproduce. The virus hijacks the host's cellular machinery to replicate its genome and assemble new viral particles, which are then released to infect other cells.
The structure of viruses is incredibly diverse. There are simple, rod-shaped viruses, more complex spherical ones, and even geometrically intricate varieties like the icosahedral viruses. The genetic material within the virus—whether it is single-stranded or double-stranded, RNA or DNA—dictates the virus's replication strategy and determines how it interacts with the host organism. While some viruses infect only specific species or cell types, others are capable of infecting multiple hosts, sometimes crossing species barriers in the process.

When handling the things of God, our method matters. Everyone who thinks about God has a method for approaching the subject, whether they recognize it or not. A theological method addresses foundational questions such as: What is theology? How should we approach Scripture? What is the role of tradition, philosophy, and experience? How do we use theology in ministering to others? These questions are vital for anyone studying God and his Word—how one defines theology, sees its task, and uses its sources will shape one’s doctrine, for better or worse. In The Method of Christian Theology, Rhyne Putman guides readers through the essential “first words” of systematic theology. Written for entry-level theology students, this book provides clear guidance for using theological sources, reasoning through difficult questions, and applying theological reflection in paper writing and preaching. By studying the foundations of theology, readers will be better equipped to serve God’s people in whatever ministry they are called to.

Pharmaceutical trials are essential to the development of new drugs and treatments, providing the necessary data to ensure they are safe and effective for public use. These trials have evolved over centuries, from rudimentary experiments to the sophisticated, multi-phase studies we see today. They are the cornerstone of modern medicine, influencing the drugs that populate our pharmacies and hospitals. However, the process is not without its flaws, and the history of pharmaceutical trials is marked by ethical concerns, controversy, and a complex relationship between researchers, pharmaceutical companies, and patients.

The primary goal of pharmaceutical trials is to test new drugs and therapies on human participants to gather data on their safety, efficacy, and potential side effects. These trials follow a strict protocol, designed to minimize risks while maximizing the quality of the data collected. The process typically begins with preclinical testing in laboratories, followed by clinical trials involving human subjects. These trials are divided into several phases, each designed to answer different scientific questions. From small-scale phase I trials to large-scale phase III studies, the data gathered at each stage is critical in determining whether a drug is ready for approval by regulatory authorities.

However, the path from laboratory to pharmacy shelves is not always smooth. The influence of pharmaceutical companies looms large over clinical trials, as they fund many studies and are often the driving force behind research agendas. While their involvement has led to groundbreaking advancements in medicine, it has also raised concerns about conflicts of interest and the integrity of trial data. In some cases, financial pressures have led to the manipulation or suppression of results that could impact a drug’s approval.
