Sinossi

In a world awash with melodies, some songs transcend time, becoming timeless classics that resonate with generation after generation. In "Melodies of Yesterday: A Journey Through Time," we embark on a nostalgic journey through the annals of popular music, exploring the songs that have shaped our culture and continue to captivate audiences today.

From the early 20th century to the modern era, this book delves into the stories behind the songs, the artists who brought them to life, and the impact they have had on society. We uncover the secrets of songwriting, examining the craft behind the lyrics and melodies that have captured our hearts. We also explore the cultural and historical context in which these songs were created, shedding light on the social and political forces that influenced their creation.

As we journey through the decades, we witness the evolution of musical genres, from the ragtime and jazz of the Roaring Twenties to the rock and roll and soul of the 1950s and 1960s. We trace the rise of new technologies, such as radio and television, which played a crucial role in disseminating music to a wider audience. We also examine the impact of music on film, exploring how soundtracks have enhanced the storytelling experience and elevated movies to new heights.

Along the way, we encounter iconic artists and bands who have left an indelible mark on the music world. From the crooners of the big band era to the rock stars of the 1970s and 1980s, we celebrate their talent, their artistry, and their contributions to the rich tapestry of popular music. We also explore the enduring appeal of vintage music, examining why certain songs continue to be cherished by generation after generation.

Whether you are a music aficionado, a history buff, or simply someone who loves a good story, "Melodies of Yesterday" promises to take you on an unforgettable journey through time. Rediscover the songs that have shaped our culture, delve into the lives of the artists who created them, and gain a deeper appreciation for the power of music to touch our hearts and souls.

In the decades after its invention in 1839, photography was inextricably linked to the Middle East. Introduced as a crucial tool for Egyptologists and Orientalists who needed to document their archaeological findings, the photograph was easier and faster to produce in intense Middle Eastern light—making the region one of the original sites for the practice of photography. A pioneering study of this intertwined history, Camera Orientalis traces the Middle East’s influences on photography’s evolution, as well as photography’s effect on Europe’s view of “the Orient.” Considering a range of Western and Middle Eastern archival material from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Ali Behdad offers a rich account of how photography transformed Europe’s distinctly Orientalist vision into what seemed objective fact, a transformation that proved central to the project of European colonialism. At the same time, Orientalism was useful for photographers from both regions, as it gave them a set of conventions by which to frame exotic Middle Eastern cultures for Western audiences. Behdad also shows how Middle Eastern audiences embraced photography as a way to foreground status and patriarchal values while also exoticizing other social classes. An important examination of previously overlooked European and Middle Eastern photographers and studios, Camera Orientalis demonstrates that, far from being a one-sided European development, Orientalist photography was the product of rich cultural contact between the East and the West.

2013: A Korean amateur photographer exhibits in Versailles.
August 1987: 32 members of the Korean Odaeyang sect are found dead.

The link between these facts? It was Bernard Hasquenoph who discovered it. Intrigued by the success of Ahae, the pseudonym of the amateur photographer, he leads the investigation and is the first to reveal the true identity of the Korean artist, billionaire and patron of the arts, entrepreneur and guru, with a vast and well-established network of influence. And the further he investigated, the more obscure and unbelievable the revelations became.
Through the portrait of one man, we plunge into a mafia world with unexpected ramifications, such as international cultural patronage, which brings into question the value of art and the probity of those in charge of it.

“Does it hurt?” When you’re a tattoo artist, that’s the most universal question. For Chris MacDonald, the answer is simple: hurts less than a broken heart. Those words are painted above the entrance to his shop, Under My Thumb Tattoos, as a reminder.

Chris and his brothers were as wild as the wind, in their house among the fields of Alliston, Ontario, when their parents divorced. Shell-shocked, they were uprooted and brought to Toronto by their dad. Their mother’s mental illness worsened in the aftermath, and she disappeared. As a teenager, Chris left home and found himself immersed in the city’s underbelly, a world where drugs, skateboarding, and punk rock reigned. Between the youth shelters, suicidal thoughts, and haunted apartments, a light shined: and it was art.

He eventually found himself following the path of his brother, Rob, and pursuing life as a tattooist. Then, at the height of a destructive summer, everything changed: he met Megan, the girl who would become his rock of ages.

This remarkable memoir examines what tattooing means to MacDonald and traces the connection his artistic motives have to both his family and childhood. The Things I Came Here With is about how crucial our past is to understanding our future, but it’s also a love letter to his daughter about the importance of expression, life’s uncertainty, and beauty.
