Sinossi

**Losing the Peace: A Turn Towards War in Vietnam** takes a fresh look at the Vietnam War, arguing that it was an unnecessary tragedy that could have been avoided. Drawing on extensive research and a wealth of primary sources, this book challenges the prevailing myth that the outbreak of large-scale fighting in 1965 was inevitable.

The author meticulously examines the decisions and actions of key players on both sides of the conflict, revealing how timidity, miscalculations, and a stubborn refusal to negotiate led to the escalation of the war. The book sheds light on the missed opportunities for peace, the flawed assumptions that guided US policymakers, and the devastating consequences of their choices.

**Losing the Peace** offers a nuanced and thought-provoking analysis of the Vietnam War, avoiding simplistic explanations and easy scapegoats. It provides a deeper understanding of the complexities of the conflict, the challenges of nation-building in a post-colonial world, and the limits of military power.

This book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the Vietnam War, its causes, and its enduring legacy. It is a powerful reminder of the dangers of hubris, the importance of diplomacy, and the need for a more nuanced and thoughtful approach to foreign policy.

A full account of the Luzon campaign, from the planning stages to the surrender of the Japanese general Yamashita.

The Luzon campaign of 1945 was the longest island campaign of the Pacific War, lasting from January 1945 to September 1945, and only ended with the surrender of Imperial Japan. It is often overlooked or mentioned in passing by most histories of that war, yet hundreds of thousands of Americans and Japanese fought in some of the worst conditions imaginable for eight months to clear Luzon of the invaders.

This full account of the Luzon campaign stretches from planning stages to the end of the war and the surrender of over 50,000 Japanese troops under the noted Japanese general Yamashita. The landings at Lingayen Gulf, the Battle for Manila and the recapture of Corregidor are all included, as well as lesser-known battles for the summer capital of Baguio, the battle for Manila's water supply, constant jungle fighting, the raids to rescue Allied POWs, the recapture of Bataan, destruction of the only Japanese armored division to fight in the Pacific, American parachute drops on Corregidor and Aparri, and much more. Individual acts of heroism are highlighted as are the interactions among the senior commanders involved, including General MacArthur, General Krueger (6th Army) and General Eichelberger (8th Army). The book ends with the surrender of Imperial Japan and the end of the Luzon Campaign in September 1945.

To escape this dark world, I must resist the temptations of the labyrinth.
They brought a “cursed” board game to the Halloween party. I didn’t believe it. I laughed and made jokes while we played.
    I made it angry.
Now I’m trapped in an underground labyrinth. Stalked by the minotaur, I flee for my life. It wants to capture me. It wants to keep me as its pet—its servant.
And the labyrinth…it’s trying to seduce me. Strange smells…strange statues…
My body is morphing. My mind is crumbling. I’ll never be able to leave this sick, beautiful dungeon.

An unsparing, incisive, yet ultimately hopeful look at how we can shed the American obsession with self-reliance that has made us less healthy, less secure, and less fulfilled
The promise that you can “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” is central to the story of the American Dream. It’s the belief that if you work hard and rely on your own resources, you will eventually succeed. However, time and again we have seen how this foundational myth, with its emphasis on individual determination, brittle self-sufficiency, and personal accomplishment, does not help us. Instead, as income inequality rises around us, we are left with shame and self-blame for our condition.
Acclaimed journalist Alissa Quart argues that at the heart of our suffering is a do-it-yourself ethos, the misplaced belief in our own independence and the conviction that we must rely on ourselves alone. Looking at a range of delusions and half solutions—from “grit” to the false Horatio Alger story to the rise of GoFundMe—Quart reveals how we have been steered away from robust social programs that would address the root causes of our problems. Meanwhile, the responsibility for survival has been shifted onto the backs of ordinary people, burdening generations with debt instead of providing the social safety net we so desperately need.
Insightful, sharply argued, and characterized by Quart’s lively writing and deep reporting, and for fans of Evicted and Nickel and Dimed, Bootstrapped is a powerful examination of what ails us at a societal level and a plan for how we can free ourselves from these self-defeating narratives.

The concept of life after death is one of humanity’s most profound and enduring mysteries. Across cultures and time periods, people have sought to understand what happens after we take our last breath. Whether driven by religious beliefs, philosophical musings, or personal experiences, the question of the afterlife has shaped much of human thought and civilization. It has influenced not only religious teachings but also art, literature, and even scientific inquiries into consciousness and the nature of existence.
Throughout history, the afterlife has been envisioned in countless ways. Ancient Egyptians believed in a journey to the underworld where the soul would face judgment, while the Greeks and Romans saw it as a realm of shadows or a place of eternal bliss for the virtuous. In the East, Hinduism and Buddhism introduced the concept of reincarnation, where the soul is reborn into new lives, shaped by karma. Similarly, Christianity, Islam, and Judaism have their own distinct visions of heaven, hell, and the possibility of eternal life.
Despite the diversity of beliefs, there is a common thread that runs through all of them: the hope that death is not the end, but a transition to another realm or state of being. For many, the afterlife provides comfort, offering a sense of continuity after the end of physical existence. For others, it serves as a source of moral guidance, with promises of reward for virtue and punishment for wrongdoing.
