Messalina - A Story of Empire...

This is the story of Messalina – third wife of Emperor Claudius and one of the most notorious women to have inhabited the Roman world.

The scandalous image of the Empress Messalina as a ruthless and sexually insatiable schemer, derived from the work of Roman historians such as Tacitus and Suetonius, has taken deep root in the Western imagination. The stories they told about her included nightly visits to a brothel and a twenty-four-hour sex competition with a prostitute. Tales like these have defined the empress's legacy, but her real story is much more complex.

In her new life of Messalina, the classicist Honor Cargill-Martin reappraises one of the most slandered and underestimated female figures of ancient history. Looking beyond the salacious anecdotes, she finds a woman battling to assert her position in the overwhelmingly male world of imperial Roman politics – and succeeding. Intelligent, passionate, and ruthless when she needed to be, Messalina's story encapsulates the cut-throat political manoeuvring and unimaginable luxury of the Julio-Claudian dynasty in its heyday.

Cargill-Martin sets out not to 'salvage' Messalina's reputation, but to look at her life in the context of her time. Above all, she seeks to reclaim the humanity of a life story previously circumscribed by currents of high politics and patriarchy.

When Gregory M. Cooper, former head of the FBI's Behavioral Sciences Unit, founded the Cold Case Foundation in 2013, he had high expectations, but couldn't anticipate the level of response. What started with just a half-dozen or so retired FBI agents and homicide detectives has ballooned to more than 150 women and men who volunteer their time to help families of deceased or missing loved ones bring closure to cases that have gone "cold."

The Cold Case Foundation shares riveting and rewarding cases the Foundation has helped solve, from high-profile missing persons cases to decades-old murders. The Cold Case Foundation has contributed to the solving of dozens of cases and is helping hundreds more homicide and missing persons investigations move forward. Police departments and victims' families from throughout the country have been supported by the Foundation's services, which are more than welcome for investigators that are increasingly finding themselves with fewer resources to dedicate to the most difficult cases.

The Cold Case Foundation covers not only the investigative approaches the Foundation's investigators employ and recommend, but also the principles and activities that help communities and law enforcement agencies come together to help solve cases that, for whatever reason, have gone unsolved—until now.

    Modern Social Problems -...

Social problems are complex issues that affect individuals, communities, and societies on a broad scale. They arise when a significant number of people recognize a condition as harmful and in need of change. Social problems can range from economic inequality and racial discrimination to climate change and healthcare disparities. Understanding these issues from a sociological perspective allows for a deeper analysis of their causes, consequences, and potential solutions.
One of the key aspects of understanding social problems is recognizing that they are socially constructed. This means that what is considered a problem can vary across different societies, cultures, and historical periods. For example, while issues like poverty and crime are widely recognized as social problems, their definitions and solutions may differ depending on cultural norms, political ideologies, and economic conditions. Sociologists examine how these definitions change over time and how power dynamics influence which issues receive public attention and policy action.
Another crucial factor in understanding social problems is identifying their root causes. Many social problems are not isolated incidents but rather symptoms of deeper structural issues within society. Economic inequality, for instance, is often linked to factors such as wage disparities, lack of access to education, and systemic discrimination. Similarly, crime rates may be influenced by socioeconomic conditions, community resources, and the effectiveness of law enforcement policies. By looking beyond individual behaviors and examining broader social structures, sociologists aim to uncover the fundamental reasons why these problems persist.

This is a special combo, including multiple titles, which are about the following subjects:
1 - Oliver Cromwell: The reason why people thought he was so evil, is because of his brutality against the Irish at that time. Several Irish and English scholars agree that Cromwell was too cruel in Ireland. Other academics blame him of 'ethnic cleansing,' or the systematic expulsion of a certain ethnic population from a territory. It typically entails the execution and deportation of Catholics, and that he is despised by Irish Catholics.
2 - Enver Pasha: It doesn’t seem like Enver Pasha was a good man. His war crimes have caused the deaths of millions of innocent citizens. Sure, during a war and a collapsing empire, you try to do what you can to stop losing, but I doubt anyone in the right mind can justify his actions, which included the slaughter of minorities in the Ottoman Empire during World War 1, and even the Armenian Genocide, which consisted of releasing prisoners upon the Armenian population to have their way and abuse, murder, rape, and pillage. Deportation of Armenians to remote areas, away from their homes, caused many to starve, drown, or become severely ill. And to this day, the Turkish government is still somewhat reluctant to acknowledge the severity of that historical atrocity.
3 - Benito Mussolini: Ironically, when we think of fascism, we often look at someone as brutal and influential as Adolf Hitler, but the word “fascism” originated from Italian. The ideology that was carried out in the vicious Spanish War right before World War 2, and was embraced by Nazi Germany, was actually pushed and more or less invented by the Italians during a critical time in history when many changes were made, and when fear and uncertainty were all in the air. Mussolini was efficient and influential. He was a fearless leader not to be trifled with. Let’s take a look at what he did and why.
