In Foundations, Karin Speedy takes us on a whirlwind journey through time and space as she navigates intersecting personal, local, family and global histories, stories that help her reckon with who she is and where she stands in this complicated (post)colonial world. If colonialism, slavery, violence and heartbreak feature heavily in her memoir so too do friendship, love, poetry, books, music, laughter and resistance. Warm, funny, quirky yet also confronting and, at times, shockingly brutal, her childhood and young adult memories bring to life the scenes and sounds of 70s, 80s and 90s New Zealand. At university, Karin's unquenchable thirst for knowledge and social justice see her embark on her first research project, a decolonial study of Louisiana Creole, research that cements her future as an anti-racist, activist scholar. Forever questioning the master narratives, digging deeper and peeling back layers to expose what lies hidden beneath and behind, Karin reminds us that history and trauma are all around us, ingrained in our lives, etched into our landscapes and at the very foundations of our cities and infrastructure. When she begins to examine her own family stories, rooted in colonisation and working-class struggle and embedded in the national histories of Aotearoa and Australia, she uncovers astonishing inter-generational palimpsests and starts to grasp the importance of listening to her ghosts.
    About the Author
Karin Speedy is an interdisciplinary academic whose research weaves together her expertise in history, literature, linguistics and translation. She has published extensively on colonial and decolonial Pacific and Francophone history and literature, as well as on Creole languages, slavery and African and Indian Ocean diasporas in the Pacific. In 2013, she was awarded the John Dunmore Medal for research, recognising her major contribution to knowledge of French language and culture in the Pacific.

Throughout the history of the Catholic Church, in her most troubled and turbulent times, God has raised up great saints as beacons of hope in the midst of darkness. Among these great saints, the four women Doctors of the Church stand out as models of courage, wisdom, and trust. Their example and teachings remain with us, are relevant to the challenges of our own day, and urge us on to renewal with unwavering hope.

"Trust shows the way," wrote Saint Hildegard of Bingen. These words set the courageous standard by which she, Teresa of Ávila, Catherine of Siena, and Thérèse of Lisieux lived. The phrase can be considered the watchword for the Church in every age, and especially in our own.

In Women of Hope, Terry Polakovic introduces these amazing women and describes the troubled times in which they lived and persevered. These women remind us that God can work through anyone to bring about his purpose. They prove to us that, as Christians, we can live in confident hope, no matter the circumstances in which we find ourselves.

Have you ever thought that just one text yes, just one text could change everything forever?
One moment you’re in love, safe in promises, certain of forever. The next, a single message can unravel it all your faith, your trust, your heart.
That’s where Joseph Kaburu’s story begins. A love once sacred, built on prayer and dreams. A betrayal that slipped in quietly, tearing it all apart. But Just One Text is not just about heartbreak it’s about what happens after. The darkness of nights filled with unanswered questions. The weight of forgiveness that feels impossible. The faith tested when love fails.
This memoir is raw, true, and unforgettable. It will take you into the tenderness of love, the sting of betrayal, and the long, aching journey toward healing. Yet it is not a story of bitterness. It is not a book of shame. It is a testimony of rising again of scars that become strength, and wounds that begin to shine as wisdom.
And here’s the truth: this is not only Joseph’s story. It’s yours too if you have ever loved and lost, trusted and been broken, wondered whether peace could ever return… or if you are already in love, or planning to love.
Just One Text will lure you with the beauty of love, break you with its betrayal, and lift you with its redemption. It will pull you in until you feel every tear, every prayer, every heartbeat.
Dare to open these pages. Dare to feel what you’ve buried. Dare to discover that even after love fails, life and healing are waiting, and still can love again.
Because once you begin, you won’t be able to stop until the last word.

‘I would get out of the car at every shopping centre and want to ask the stranger walking by with their trolley: “Why are you still shopping? Someone I love has died.”’ – Dela Gwala
Death is a fact of life, but the experience of grief is unique to each of us. This timely collection brings together a range of voices to offer reflections on death and dying, from individual losses to large scale catastrophes.
Karin Schimke revisits her troubled relationship with her late father, a Second World War survivor ‘whose brain had been broken by violence’. Madeleine Fullard, the head of South Africa’s Missing Persons Task Team, draws us into the search for activists who were ‘disappeared’ or went missing in political circumstances between 1960 and 1994. Caine Prize winner Lidudumalingani remembers his childhood in a small village in the Eastern Cape, and how his mother always listened to death notices read over the radio as a way of bearing witness to the grief of strangers.
The other contributors in this poignant and thought-provoking anthology turn their minds to subjects as varied as the ritual of washing the body of the deceased before burial, the ethics of killing small animals, and the extinction of humankind.
In a time of relentless grief, Our Ghosts Were Once People reminds us that one of the small consolations of literature is that all sorrows can be borne.
