Sinossi

In the quaint village of Willowbrook, where secrets lurk beneath the surface and laughter echoes through the streets, a hilarious comedy of errors is about to unfold. When Clive, a charming stranger seeking refuge from the war, arrives in the village, he sets off a chain of events that turns the tranquil community upside down.

Clive's encounter with Penelope Toop, the vicar's wife and a former actress yearning for excitement, sparks a connection that ignites a whirlwind of misunderstandings and mistaken identities. As Miss Skillon, the formidable village matriarch, disapproves of Penelope's unconventional ways and views Clive with suspicion, the stage is set for a hilarious farce.

With a German prisoner of war on the loose, a stolen vicar's outfit, and a series of comical mix-ups, the villagers find themselves caught in a web of deception and absurdity. As rumors fly and tensions rise, the lines between friend and foe blur, and the truth becomes elusive.

Amidst the chaos, unlikely alliances form, and hidden agendas come to light. The arrival of a bishop and another vicar for a visit only adds to the confusion, as the villagers struggle to maintain their dignity and sanity amidst the whirlwind of laughter and mayhem.

With mistaken identities, secret rendezvous, and unexpected twists, this uproarious comedy of errors will leave readers laughing out loud. As the curtain rises on this hilarious tale, the inhabitants of Willowbrook embark on a side-splitting adventure that will have you turning the pages late into the night.

In this witty and charming farce, the villagers of Willowbrook remind us that even in the midst of chaos and confusion, laughter can prevail. With its cast of unforgettable characters and its clever plot that keeps you guessing until the very end, this book is a delightful escape from the everyday world.

Shortlisted for the 2016 Wales Book of the Year: The Open University in Wales Creative Non-Fiction Award
'Eluned Gramich has written the perfect essay - a minutely detailed yet nuanced evocation of place and personalities that is full of ecologically precise imagery and is as attentive to the Japanese language as it is to Hokkaidan landscape.' – Mark Cocker
As precise and nuanced as Japanese calligraphy, this memoir of the author's stay on the remote Hokkaido island in the far north of Japan, has at its heart the mountain, Yotei-san, the region's iconic equivalent to Mount Fuji. As much about learning a language (with connotations of 'reading' a wild landscape) as it is about nature, this dignified and nuanced work evokes what is cultured and cultivated, and yet also honours the wild; the untranslatable. With its themes of seasonal transformation, the peripheral, folklore, loneliness and learning to belong, this work takes a personal philosophical stance in relation to the centre and the periphery.
'"Eluned Gramich" is a name to hear time and again in the future. [This writing] is as good as we the jurors have ever read... short but perfectly formed... absolutely perfect.' – Justin Albert
'Quite beautiful. [The author encounters a culture that is completely alien] and she does it with a poet's eye... precisely and vitally. She reads this unfamiliarity with all her imaginative nerve-endings open: the effect is quite remarkable...' – Tony Brown
'Most rewarding is the philosophical approach... [Gramich's] embracing of... cultural multiplicity, fluidity and adaptability... suits perfectly the changing boundaries of our modern world.' – Wales Arts Review

Paul Morphy, born in New Orleans in 1837, was considered the greatest chess player of his era. He was a child prodigy who learned playing chess simply by watching family members play, and when he was only 9 years old, he was hailed as the best chess player in New Orleans. This book describes Morphy's trip to Europe, i.e., England and France, where he wanted to play the European Champion Staunton, a match that never came about as the correspondence included in this book shows. He did play - and beat - virtually every other strong player in Europe though, and tales of these matches and people make up a large part of this book. After his triumphs in Europe, Paul Morphy was considerd the unofficial World Chess Champion, as official championship tournaments were only held from 1886. Morphy retired from chess in 1859 in order to devote himself to his law practice. He died from a stroke in 1884. (Summary by Availle)
