Speak Still confronts colonial silencing by asking out loud: why do non-native speakers of English feel estranged from the English language, despite having known it since childhood? Is it possible for us to own this silence? If so, how can we find our eloquence from our experience of speechlessness? How can we bring the foreign language home?
Blending personal narrative and cultural criticism, Speak Still takes Tong's bilingual experience in Hong Kong and the UK as a point of departure and reflects on the meaning of language, selfhood, and belonging. Through poignant observations of everyday life as it is experienced between languages, Tong conceptualises a possibility to communicate and connect beyond words: by reclaiming silence as an interlocutor that interrupts cultural homogeneity and creates space for the unheard.
Speak Still shows that this silence, indeed, speaks volumes.

The Nok civilization is one of the most fascinating and mysterious ancient cultures of West Africa. It flourished between approximately 1500 BCE and 500 CE, making it one of the earliest known complex societies in sub-Saharan Africa. The Nok people are best known for their remarkable terracotta sculptures, which provide valuable insights into their artistry, beliefs, and way of life. Despite their historical significance, much about the Nok civilization remains unknown, leaving archaeologists and historians to piece together their story from scattered artifacts and excavation sites.
The first discovery of Nok artifacts occurred in 1928, when British archaeologist Bernard Fagg came across a series of terracotta figurines in central Nigeria. These artifacts, found near the village of Nok, revealed an advanced artistic style that was distinct from any previously known African culture. The sculptures depicted human figures with intricate hairstyles, elaborate jewelry, and expressive facial features, suggesting a highly developed artistic tradition. This discovery marked the beginning of a deeper exploration into the Nok civilization, leading to further excavations that uncovered tools, pottery, and evidence of early ironworking.
One of the most significant aspects of Nok’s discovery was its role in the history of metallurgy in Africa. Archaeological findings suggest that the Nok people were among the earliest in West Africa to practice iron smelting, a technological advancement that contributed to agricultural development and societal growth. The presence of iron tools indicates that they engaged in farming, hunting, and trade, supporting the idea that Nok society was well-organized and economically active.

Venezuela’s economic history is a tale of immense wealth and devastating collapse, shaped by its vast oil reserves and the policies that governed them. Once one of the richest countries in Latin America, Venezuela’s rise was fueled by oil, an abundant resource that transformed the nation’s fortunes. However, overreliance on this single commodity, combined with political instability and economic mismanagement, led to one of the most severe financial crises in modern history. Understanding Venezuela’s economic journey requires a closer look at how it soared to prosperity, the warning signs that were ignored, and the policies that ultimately triggered its downfall.
The discovery of oil in the early 20th century set Venezuela on a path of rapid economic growth. As global demand for oil skyrocketed, so did Venezuela’s revenues, allowing the country to modernize its infrastructure, expand public services, and improve living standards. By the mid-20th century, Venezuela was among the most prosperous nations in Latin America, boasting a strong middle class and a high standard of living. The government used oil wealth to fund social programs, subsidize goods, and invest in national development, creating an illusion of economic stability. Yet, beneath the surface, a dangerous dependence on oil was forming, leaving the economy vulnerable to external shocks.
Despite periods of prosperity, warning signs of economic instability were evident long before the country entered crisis. As oil prices fluctuated, so did Venezuela’s financial health. Instead of diversifying the economy, successive governments doubled down on oil dependency, making the country highly susceptible to global market shifts.
