Sinossi

"Cursed Crops" explores the history of agriculture through the lens of historical catastrophes, revealing how famines, plagues, and natural disasters have shaped global food systems. The book highlights the vulnerabilities inherent in our reliance on a few staple crops, demonstrating how this genetic uniformity can lead to widespread crises. For example, the Irish Potato Famine, caused by a single potato variety's susceptibility to disease, illustrates this precariousness.

The book examines the biology of plant diseases, explaining how pathogens evolve and spread, often with devastating consequences for food supply and sustainability. It also addresses the role of climate change and other environmental factors in exacerbating agricultural crises.

"Cursed Crops" uses an interdisciplinary approach, drawing from historical records, scientific studies, and epidemiological data. The book progresses by first establishing the historical context of agriculture, then detailing the genetic vulnerabilities of crops and the biology of plant diseases. It concludes by addressing the role of climate change and other environmental factors. This approach provides a comprehensive understanding of the complex factors that threaten our food systems and underscores the need for more sustainable and resilient agricultural practices.

The Spanish nobility continues to be influential in the early 21st century in politics, academia, and the economy. The polarized socio-cultural environment in Spain in the early decades of the millennium is paralleled by an increasingly divisive political discourse and deadlock in terms of governance. Understanding the subcultures of the most influential socio-political groups is important to be able to interpret the political developments. A vast array of studies have been conducted about the rise of the extreme left but there is a dearth of studies dealing with the impact of the traditional nobility in contemporary Spain. The present study presents an emic model of elite culture through the application of a grounded theory approach to texts released by five of the main noble associations in Spain during the last ten years. An inductive approach focuses on the identification of important themes and concepts as expressed and understood by the participants. Traditional noble associations are the focus of the study, in particular, the associations under Royal patronage. The resulting emic model aims to map the mores, norms, and values of a highly visible social group about which there are very few sociological and anthropological studies.

    On liberty

In the tract on Liberty, Mill is advocating the rights of the individual as against Society at the very opening of an era that was rapidly coming to the conclusion that the individual had no absolute rights against Society. The eighteenth century view is that individuals existed first, each with their own special claims and responsibilities: that they deliberately formed a Social State, either by a contract or otherwise, and that then finally they limited their own action out of regard for the interests of the social organism thus arbitrarily produced. This is hardly the view of the nineteenth century. It is possible that logically the individual is prior to the State; historically and in the order of Nature, the State is prior to the individual. In other words, such rights as every single personality possesses in a modern world do not belong to him by an original ordinance of Nature, but are slowly acquired in the growth and development of the social state.
