Sinossi

"Arctic Expansion" explores Russia's multi-faceted strategy in the Arctic, a region of increasing geopolitical importance. The book examines how Russia's historical claims, ambitious resource extraction projects, and growing military presence shape the future of the High North. Did you know that Russia views the Arctic not only as an economic opportunity due to newly accessible resources but also as a strategic buffer zone vital for national security?

Russia's actions have broad implications for international relations, environmental security, and the rights of Indigenous populations. The book analyzes Russia's Arctic policy, which is driven by economic necessity, security concerns, and national pride. It delves into the legal basis of Russia's claims and contrasts them with competing claims from other Arctic nations.

The book progresses by first establishing the historical context of Russian expansion, then analyzing the contemporary landscape with a focus on resource extraction and military build-up, and finally, examining the geopolitical implications of Russia's actions. This allows readers to understand the complex interplay of factors shaping the Arctic region.

Riding With Cochise brings the violent drama of the American Southwest to life through the eyes of the legendary Apache chieftain Cochise and three other tribal leaders. Relying largely on the oral histories told by relatives of these great warriors as well as personal diaries of others who were involved, veteran author Steve Price takes listeners deep into the Cochise Stronghold, through Massacre Canyon, and across Apache Pass. You'll sit beside the campfires of Tom Jeffords, the only white man Cochise ever fully trusted, and touch the faded stone walls of Fort Craig, the rock cairns at Dragoon Springs, and the cottonwoods at Ojo Caliente. You'll be with General George Crook and Lt. Charles Gatewood as they pursue Geronimo through New Mexico, Arizona and even into Mexico's Sierra Madre, and learn how a handful of Apache warriors could disappear into open desert, ride and sleep on horseback, and outwit thousands of American and Mexican troops for months at a time. Thoroughly researched and written in easy but fast-paced storytelling style, Riding With Cochise presents a sweeping history of how one Native American tribe fought desperately to keep its land and its culture in the face of America's westward expansion known as Manifest Destiny, then spent twenty-seven years in exile and captivity before finally being allowed to return to their beloved homeland.

The edited collection Unlearning Languages That Control the Mind (ULCM) is to be listened to as a continuous multi–voiced work on what takes place when we forget that unlearning is a part of our existence as much as learning. As the world as we know it finds itself at a critical juncture yet again, how we talk about the continuously amassing genocidal invasions and authoritarian occupations of our minds, thoughts, bodies and environments will affect how we experience, process and counter them on a day–to–day basis. Based on this, ULCM offers its listeners a singular interdisciplinary blueprint of the inner and outer workings of motivated language use when in service of mind engineering and engineered acting. As such, it is a valuable enabling resource for anyone looking to identify and unlearn the languages that mask belief traps and cognitive distortions set up by various antisocial actors to keep our day–to–day cognition and acting confined to society as engineered laboratory. With its interdisciplinary breadth and engaging multimodal content, this handbook breaks new grounds in actionable application of science as an accessible community–enabling tool for seeing through, i.e. dismantling belief traps and mental distortions that turn language use into mindbody abuse.

In Defense of Women is H. L. Mencken's 1918 book on women and the relationship between the sexes. Some laud the book as progressive while others brand it as reactionary. While Mencken didn't champion women's rights, he described women as wiser in many novel and observable ways, while demeaning average men. According to Mencken's biographer, Fred Hobson: Depending on the position of the reader, he was either a great defender of women's rights or, as a critic labelled him in 1916, 'the greatest misogynist since Schopenhauer','the country's high-priest of woman-haters.' The new United States was faced with a fundamental problem: to expand, it had to settle lands to the west of the Appalachian Mountains, ceded to it by the British. However, the mountains were occupied by Native American groups who had no desire to make way for white settlers. The treaty had created a vast frontier for the fledgling nation, and any American settlers pushing west along it were bound to encounter hostile natives.
The conflicts that followed consisted mostly of the Native Americans suffering defeat in the face of a better-equipped adversary, interspersed with binding treaties, which, on the side of the federal government, proved not very binding at all. Occasionally, however, there arose a Native American leader of such ability that such defeats were temporarily reversed, and Little Turtle, the war chief of the Miami tribe, was one such man. Under his leadership, a confederation of Miami and other tribes inflicted the worst defeat ever suffered by an American army in the newly independent nation. Almost a quarter of the Army’s total strength was lost in a single battle, but while later Native American leaders such as Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse have become legends, Little Turtle is not as well-remembered. This is particularly odd, given that he actually defeated the American military and helped shape the development of the nascent United States and its military. Before Little Turtle’s War, it was believed that the U.S. did not need a professional army; that ordinary citizens would take up arms in times of threat and serve in militias as they had done in the fight against the British. After this war, the U.S. government was forced to recognize the need for a professional standing army.
