  For decades, it was believed that the first major accident at a nuclear power plant took place at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania in 1979, which took nearly 15 years and $1 billion to fully clean up after that disaster. However, Three Mile Island paled in comparison to Chernobyl, which to this day remains the most notorious nuclear accident in history. Located in the Ukraine, the Chernobyl power plant was undergoing experiments in the early morning hours of April 26, 1986 when it suffered a series of explosions in one of its nuclear reactors, killing over 30 people at the plant and spread radioactive fallout across a wide swath of the Soviet Union. Although the Soviets would try to cover up just how disastrous the accident at Chernobyl was, it was impossible to hide the full extent of the damage given that radioactive material was affecting Western Europe as well. All told, the accident caused an estimated $18 billion in damages, forced the evacuation of everybody nearby, and continues to produce adverse health effects that are still being felt in the region.  
  	The disasters emphatically demonstrated the dangers of nuclear power plants, and it brought about new regulations across the world in an effort to make the use of nuclear energy safer. Meanwhile, scientists and scholars are still studying the effects of the radiation on people exposed to the disasters and continue to come up with estimates of just how deadly they were. 
  	As it turned out, however, Chernobyl was not the first major nuclear disaster that the Soviets tried to hide. In 1957, a nuclear disaster occurred in an area near the Ural Mountains, far to the east of Moscow and to the north of the border with Kazakhstan, and to this day, it is a disaster few have heard of, even though it was the world’s worst nuclear disaster until Chernobyl. For those aware of it, it is now known as the Kyshtym disaster.

  German women played an essential role in the Nazi movement that outweighed the Nazi Party's propaganda that a woman's position was solely in the home as mothers and child-bearers. Thirteen million of the projected forty million German women in the Reich were active in Nazi Party organizations that promoted the regime's goals of racial purity, imperial conquest, and global war. The Nazi party was about as male-centered as any political party in history. Its ideas on women and women's rightful responsibilities in society were novel and, at best, radical. Despite this, the Party received widespread and active support among women in Germany at the time.This book investigates Magda Goebbels, Leni Riefenstahl, and Winifried Wagner and how they became enchanted by Hitler and obliged [his] Nazi philosophy. These three ladies were not ordinary Germans. Magda was hitched to Joseph Goebbels, the Reich Minister of Enlightenment and Propaganda and perhaps the most influential man of the Third Reich. An entertainer and famous movie chief, Leni was liable for a key publicity film. Winifred was hitched to author Richard Wagner's child and assumed responsibility for Wagner's inheritance. Hitler was captivated by every one of the women and used them to add his longing to reestablish Germany to its past brilliance. The women concurred with Hitler's longing to renew Germany's significance and perceived that once he became Chancellor, they would benefit enormously. These women didn't act as indicated by the standards of the times. They got out of the endorsed jobs relegated to ladies.

  The Cultural Revolution, which took place in China from 1966 to 1976, was one of the most tumultuous and transformative periods in the country’s history. Initiated by Mao Zedong, the founding father of the People’s Republic of China, the movement sought to preserve Chinese communism by removing capitalist, traditional, and cultural elements from Chinese society. At its core, the Cultural Revolution aimed to enforce Maoist ideology, reaffirm his leadership, and transform the cultural, social, and political fabric of China. It was a radical attempt to reshape Chinese society by addressing perceived corruption and ideological impurity within the Communist Party and broader society. 
  Mao’s motivations for launching the Cultural Revolution were multifaceted. After the failure of the Great Leap Forward (1958-1962), which had resulted in widespread famine and economic chaos, Mao’s position within the Communist Party had been weakened. The Cultural Revolution provided Mao with an opportunity to reassert his control over the party and eliminate rivals, many of whom were seen as too moderate or resistant to his vision of a truly communist society. It also reflected Mao’s concern that China was veering away from the revolutionary ideals that had initially driven the Communist Party. 
  The movement was largely propelled by the Red Guards, a youth-based movement that encouraged the younger generation to challenge authority and remove perceived counter-revolutionary influences. Under the banner of Maoism, the Red Guards sought to destroy the "Four Olds"—old customs, old culture, old habits, and old ideas. This led to widespread destruction of cultural heritage, including temples, books, and artworks. Intellectuals, teachers, and perceived enemies of the revolution were subjected to violent persecution, public humiliation, and forced labor, with many being sent to the countryside for "re-education."
