  At Xultun, Guatemala, Maya daykeepers published astronomical tables tracking the movements of celestial bodies in the early 9th century during the heyday of Maya astronomy. The tables are also found in the Dresden Codex, a bark-paper book written in the 15th century. Specialist astronomical observers corrected and maintained Maya calendars, which were largely based on ancient Mesoamerican calendars created at least as early as 1500 BCE. The Maya even structured their government in part based on astronomy tracking requirements.

  This is volume one of the six-volume Shankara Source Book, which contains writings by Shri Shankara, arranged systematically by subject.Shri Shankara was a great philosopher-sage who expressed the non-dual teachings in such a complete and satisfactory way that his formulation has been followed by authentic teachers of the non-dual tradition ever since.Most of his writings are in the form of commentaries on revealed texts such as the principle Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and the Brahma Sutras, so what he said was placed around those texts, which are far from systematic.His aim was to demonstrate that underlying the apparent contradictions and differences on the surface, all the great revealed scriptures in fact point ultimately to one Supreme Truth. He wished to do this in order to overcome the confusion that was causing hardship to the people at large, and creating difficulties for dedicated seekers. Shankara probably lived in the 8th century, and died in his early 30s.Shankara considered other views in great detail, sometimes provisionally accepting elements of their arguments, and then pointing out where those views lead to difficulties. One of the great qualities of the non-dual teachings as formulated by Shankara is that they are able to recognise and incorporate what is valid and useful in other views.All this can make it difficult to find what Shankara said on particular subjects. To meet this difficulty, in the Source Book, the writings have been freshly translated, and brought together under subject headings. These in turn have been arranged in six volumes each covering one broad topic.   Roman society, one of the most influential civilizations in human history, was built upon a complex and well-structured foundation that evolved over centuries. The origins of Roman civilization can be traced back to the early settlements along the Tiber River, where communities of farmers and shepherds gradually coalesced into the city-state of Rome. As Rome expanded, both geographically and politically, its social structure grew more intricate, reflecting a blend of indigenous customs and influences from conquered territories. 
  At the heart of Roman society was a rigid social hierarchy, essential to maintaining order and stability. This structure was divided primarily into two main classes: the patricians and the plebeians. The patricians were the elite, consisting of noble families who claimed descent from Rome's founding fathers. They held significant political power and owned vast lands. In contrast, the plebeians represented the common people, including farmers, craftsmen, and laborers. Though initially excluded from many aspects of governance, the plebeians gradually secured political rights through persistent social struggles, leading to the establishment of the office of the Tribune, which protected their interests. 
  Apart from these major classes, Roman society also included a growing number of slaves, who were often prisoners of war or born into servitude. Slavery was integral to the Roman economy, with slaves performing various tasks, from domestic duties to skilled labor in workshops. Despite their lack of freedom, some slaves, particularly those with specialized skills, could earn their emancipation, gaining the status of freedmen and integrating into the lower echelons of society.

  I guess during the time I was struggling with middle school peers and worried about what other girls thought of my clothes, something nasty happened approximately 6,500 miles away, which is only an 8-hour flight from where I used to live. Who would have thought that even in the 90s, such atrocities would be committed? The movie Hotel Rwanda has depicted some sad displays of human cruelty, although the brutality of it has mostly been censored for the sake of wider audiences. When you read the descriptions of the Rwandan genocide, and try to imagine the scope of the death toll and methods being used to commit the war crimes, you can’t help but feel deeply saddened and disgusted by what human people are capable of. 
  Throughout the Rwandan Civil War, between April seventh and July fifteenth, 1994, the Rwandan genocide happened. Equipped militias murdered members of the Tutsi minority ethnic group, and some moderate Hutu and Twa, throughout about 100 days. According to the most regularly accepted academic estimates, between 500,000 and 800,000 Tutsis passed away. The death toll (consisting of Hutu and Twa casualties) is approximated to be around 1,100,000.
