A previously unpublished collection of stories about motherhood, violence, and desire, from the cult icon Katherine Dunn, the author of Geek Love.

A woman invests in a series of sex robots to get her off and comes to terms with the limitations—and real threat—of automated companionship. A knowing young student pursues an affair with an older man, the poet in residence at the university where she studies writing, and weighs the benefits and costs of their arrangement. A mother moves to a farm with her family and must come to terms with the violence simmering beneath her skin.

Near Flesh is the first and only collection of short fiction by Katherine Dunn, the author of the bestselling novel Geek Love. These nineteen stories are, like Dunn’s entire body of work, attuned to the spit and grit of tough living. They pulse with yearning for a more prosperous life, for sexual satisfaction, to escape abusive husbands and the disappointments of convention. A better life, for these mostly female protagonists, seems always just out of reach. In Near Flesh, Dunn explores the struggle of women to live on their own terms, and the desire to relish—rather than squash—what distinguishes a person.

In his second collection of stories, author and filmmaker R.W. Gray (Crisp) once again finds the place where the beautiful, the strange, and the surreal all meet—sometimes meshing harmoniously, sometimes colliding with terrible violence, launching his characters into a redefined reality. A lovestruck man discovers the secret editing room where his girlfriend erases all her flaws; a massage artist finds that she can alleviate her clients’ pain in more ways than one; a beautiful man invites those who want him to do whatever they wish with his unconscious body; and a gay couple meets what appear to be the younger versions of themselves, and learns that history can indeed repeat itself.

"For almost six decades Segal has quietly produced some of the best fiction and essays in American literature . . ." —The New York TimesThe eagerly awaited follow-up to Ladies' Lunch, beloved New Yorker writer Lore Segal's final story collection returns with further tales of the old friends who have loved and lunched together for over forty years."Segal writes with welcome clarity about life’s final years, and if her characters are not always as wise as they think they are, Segal eyes them all with the unsentimental wisdom of a life spent writing wondrous stories and essays, a career spent telling the truth." —SlateLore Segal is a master of the short story, and this collection shows her in peak form. Profound, dark, and often hilarious, Segal portrays her characters' foibles, eccentricities, and passions with great compassion and exactness, as they grapple with life, aging, and each other.Readers of Ladies Lunch will recognize the educated, urbane nonagenarian women who have been friends for a lifetime, as they tackle aging's affronts with wit, grace, and resourcefulness. With an Introduction by Vivian Gornick

A quiet, contemplative tale steeped in atmosphere and artistic beauty. A painter retreats to a seaside cottage in search of rest and inspiration, but soon begins to sense strange presences along the shore and beneath the waves. Are they ghosts, sea ghouls, or beings older than time itself? The answers drift just out of reach, like mist over the ocean.
The story focuses on the sensations and intuitions of the main character, imbuing the whole narrative with an evocative taste of elusive dread, quite distinct from overt horror. The Night Ocean has long been part of the Lovecraftian canon, even though a manuscript discovered in the early 2000s, with Lovecraft’s revisions, reveals that only 10% of ‘The Night Ocean’ can be attributed to the writer from Providence. This realization underscores how sensitive and precocious the eighteen-year-old Robert H. Barlow was at the time.
It stands as the last existing work of fiction in which Lovecraft participated.
