Sinossi

'Public Safety' offers a comprehensive exploration of modern community protection systems, examining the vital interplay between law enforcement, emergency services, and civilian participation in creating safer communities. Through real-world case studies and data-driven research, the book illuminates how these three fundamental pillars work together to build effective safety networks, from traditional policing methods to cutting-edge emergency management technologies.

The book's systematic approach progresses through three major sections, beginning with an analysis of modern law enforcement evolution and technological integration. It then transitions to examining emergency services coordination, including fire departments and medical response teams, before culminating in an exploration of citizen participation initiatives like neighborhood watch programs and digital alert systems.

Notable findings reveal that communities with strong civilian-police partnerships consistently demonstrate improved safety outcomes, including lower crime rates and faster emergency response times.

What sets this work apart is its comprehensive integration of multiple disciplines, including urban planning, psychology, and technology, to present a holistic view of public safety systems. The analysis draws from diverse geographical settings - urban centers, suburban communities, and rural areas - providing readers with practical frameworks while addressing contemporary debates about police reform and the balance between security and privacy rights.

Written for both professionals and engaged citizens, the book combines academic insight with accessible language to deliver actionable strategies for improving community safety.

A closely observed work of narrative nonfiction about four young romance scammers in Lagos, Nigeria, as they struggle to get by in one of the world's most unequal cities. Ikotun, one of Lagos’s poorest neighborhoods, lies ten miles and a world away from the towers and beaches at the heart of Nigeria’s megacity. By day, the market vibrates with the sound of traders hawking their wares. By night, thousands of workers of another kind begin their shifts in bars and crumbling apartments: these are the Yahoo Boys. Mostly men in their teens and twenties, many turning to drugs to stay awake as they chat with “clients” overseas, the Yahoo Boys are online romance scammers. Whether impersonating male celebrities or anonymous young women, each year they catfish millions of dollars from victims. Some have attained the status of folk heroes, while thousands more “cash out” only to lose it all. Inspired by his mother’s own brush with a scammer, the journalist Carlos Barragán takes us on a journey to understand the lives of the Yahoo Boys of Ikotun. We meet Biggy and Chibuike, each struggling with the temptations of fast money; Azeez, a tailor’s apprentice caught between the lure of crime and Nigeria’s economic crisis; and Richie, who is convinced that he’s responsible for the death of a woman in Kentucky he manipulated online for years. Written with sensitivity and nuance, and posing difficult questions about reparations and the Western loneliness epidemic, The Yahoo Boys is this generation’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers—the work of a blazing new journalistic talent.

After the body of another missing girl, Becky Godden-Edwards, was uncovered, the police had two murders on their hands and one suspect, but how many more unsolved murders could Christopher Halliwell be responsible for? The hidden cache of around sixty pieces of women's clothing and accessories that he led police to suggests that the number could be much higher than the two murders he has been convicted of.

    Watergate: The Scandal That...

Increasingly and mistakenly viewed as a single scandal within the United States government, what is commonly referred to as the Watergate scandal serves as an overarching term for a series of scandals beginning in 1971 and extending through 1974, although more than any other, it refers to the specific break-in at the Watergate Hotel and office complex in Washington, D.C. The crisis, originating in a secretive battle between the two major political parties, the Nixon White House’s paranoia, and the ensuing conflict concerning the release of confidential information to the public, induced senior government officials into committing crimes (most notoriously petty burglary) and coverups for the purposes of character assassination and inter-political espionage, and it ultimately resulted in the first and only resignation of a sitting American president, Richard Milhous Nixon. Watergate has since become so synonymous with scandal that “gate” is typically added to the end of words associated with scandals even today.
In the wake of the seemingly peculiar burglary, gradual media and judicial pursuits of the thread of scandals led from one thing to another over the following years until it began to culminate with Congressional impeachment proceedings and a momentous showdown between the President and the Supreme Court over the release of presidential tapes, a moment in which Nixon seriously considered defying the Court and initiating a constitutional crisis. When he at last surrendered them, excerpts were blatantly missing, most famously an 18 minute stretch. Given the flurry of activities, it has only been in recent years that historians have gained a full measure of the nation’s perilous status during the intense battle between the various branches of the federal government, and the American public’s view of government in general took a decidedly negative turn.
