Sinossi

Nora Connolly O'Brien's "The Irish Rebellion of 1916: or, the Unbroken Tradition" offers an incisive exploration of the Easter Rising's intricate tapestry of ideals, motives, and consequences. Written in a reflective and evocative style, O'Brien weaves personal narratives with historical analysis, situating the rebellion within the broader context of Irish nationalism and the struggle for identity. The book is imbued with first-hand accounts and vivid descriptions, engaging the reader in the emotional intensity of the events that unfolded in Dublin. O'Brien's work transcends mere historical retelling, focusing on the resilience of the Irish spirit across generations, which she deems the 'unbroken tradition.' As the daughter of revolutionary leader James Connolly, O'Brien brings a unique and personal perspective to her examination of the rebellion. Her familial ties to the events of 1916 deeply inform her narrative, adding layers of authenticity and emotion. Having lived through the tumultuous aftermath of the rebellion, she sought to document not only the struggle for Irish independence but also the enduring aspirations of her people, ensuring their sacrifices are neither forgotten nor dismissed. Readers with an interest in Irish history, revolutionary movements, and the complexities of national identity will find this book both enlightening and deeply moving. O'Brien's heartfelt prose and critical insights illuminate a pivotal moment in history, making this work an essential addition to the libraries of both historians and general readers alike.

Americans have long been fascinated by the Civil War, marveling at the size of the battles, the leadership of the generals, and the courage of the soldiers. Since the war's start over 150 years ago, the battles have been subjected to endless debate among historians and the generals themselves. The Civil War was the deadliest conflict in American history, and had the two sides realized it would take 4 years and inflict over a million casualties, it might not have been fought. Since it did, however, historians and history buffs alike have been studying and analyzing the biggest battles ever since.
By the close of 1864, Abraham Lincoln had been reelected, the Union army had taken Nashville from General Hood, and Sherman had concluded his total war, “slash-and-burn” march of destruction to Savannah, Georgia, offering it as a Christmas present to Lincoln. Nevertheless, with everything seemingly falling to pieces, the South still held out hope of some sort of miracle, and Davis even attempted to send a peace delegation to meet with Lincoln in the early months of 1865. On January 28, 1865 as Union General Ulysses S. Grant was continuing to lay siege to Lee’s army at Petersburg, Virginia, Davis sent three commissioners headed by Vice-President Stephens to initiate informal peace talks with Lincoln. By February 3, however, the talks, known as the Hampton Roads Conference, came to a stalemate as Lincoln would accept nothing less than total union, while Davis would only accept Southern independence.
Even at that point, the South was clearly on its last legs. General George H. Thomas destroyed John Bell Hood’s Confederate army at the battles of Nashville and Franklin, leaving only two large Confederate armies still in the field. Lee's army was weakened by desertion, lack of supplies and casualties, and Joseph E. Johnston’s army could barely resist against Sherman’s army as it was advancing north toward Virginia.

    White Supremacy - From Eugenics...

White Supremacy begins with the anatomy of the murder of 10 black people in Buffalo, New York in 2022. The killer, 18-year old Payton Gendron, says he was driven by 'Great Replacement' - the conspiracy theory that a Jewish-led elite is replacing white people with black and brown people. This, and a spate of similar hate crimes, begs the question: what are the origins of such behaviour?

Gavin Evans traces the historical roots of white supremacy. He begins in the 19th century with Charles Darwin and his cousin Francis Galton's race-based theories before looking at the spread of eugenics ideas throughout the UK, Europe and the United States, their Holocaust-prompted decline after World War 2, and their revival in a different guise through the promotion of race science from the late 20th century. Evans also examines the hatching of 'Great Replacement' conspiratorial ideas in the 21st century - and their expression via alt-right forums to the minds of troubled young men with access to assault rifles.

White Supremacy breaks new ground in showing the links between mainstream 'Replacement Theory' and the terrorist version cited by far-right killers. It also traces the thread between these ideas and the race science promoted both by the far right and establishment figures. It looks at what these ideas have in common with those promoted by, for example, the founder of eugenics.

Through raw and compelling testimonies from both sides of the community, Dillon explores the overlooked perspectives of women whose lives were impacted by the brutal conflict. Some were directly involved in violence as members of paramilitary organisations. Many witnessed the ruthless murders of family members. All were profoundly and irrevocably affected by the violence and its aftermath.

Former IRA volunteers, the wife of notorious UDA Commander Stevie ‘Top Gun’ McKeag, a survivor of the 1974 Dublin bombings and the daughter of a murdered judge share their stories among many others, their words reverberating with the intensity of their experiences.

Dillon also unmasks the shadowy dealings of British intelligence and the impact of collusion on unsolved murders, exposing the layers of deception that have haunted families and communities.

The Sorrow and the Loss is an eye-opening exploration of the previously unwritten history of the Troubles, challenging readers to confront the harsh realities of a conflict where truth and justice remain elusive.

Carthage emerged as one of the most powerful cities of the ancient world, a beacon of wealth, trade, and military strength. Located on the coast of modern-day Tunisia, it was founded by Phoenician settlers from the city of Tyre around the ninth century BCE. These settlers, skilled in navigation and commerce, established Carthage as a strategic hub that would eventually dominate Mediterranean trade.
From its earliest days, Carthage thrived on its ability to control maritime routes and forge strong economic connections across North Africa, Iberia, and the islands of the western Mediterranean. Unlike many other ancient powers that relied on agriculture and territorial conquest, Carthage built its strength through commerce. It became the heart of a vast trade network that stretched from the shores of the Middle East to the Atlantic coast of Africa, exchanging goods such as silver, tin, spices, and textiles.
The city itself reflected its growing influence. Carthaginian engineers designed an impressive harbor that could shelter hundreds of ships, a crucial asset for a state whose power depended on naval supremacy. This naval dominance allowed Carthage to project its influence far beyond its immediate borders, securing colonies and trading posts in places such as Sicily.
