Sinossi

Crisis Policy Roles examines the often-overlooked potential of law students in addressing public legal crises, arguing for their strategic mobilization. It highlights how these students, with proper supervision, can provide vital support through research, community engagement, and advocacy. The book illustrates that law students can develop practical skills and contribute meaningfully to urgent legal needs while aiding overwhelmed legal professionals and vulnerable populations.

The book progresses by first defining "public legal crises" and tracing the evolution of student involvement in legal aid. It then details student contributions, featuring case studies where student-led investigations informed policy responses to housing crises and environmental disasters. It uniquely compiles direct interviews with students and faculty involved in crisis response, offering first-hand perspectives.

The exploration emphasizes the importance of partnering with community organizations to ensure student efforts align with community needs and priorities. This multi-faceted approach, considering perspectives from law students, legal educators, and crisis-affected communities, makes the book valuable for law students, legal educators, policymakers, and legal professionals involved in crisis response efforts. It emphasizes ethical considerations and best practices for incorporating law students into crisis response, ensuring student well-being while maximizing their impact in providing legal aid and student advocacy during times of societal upheaval.

In this audiobook, Reecejames Wideman explores what meaning really is, how it shapes behavior and decision-making, and why humans will sacrifice comfort, certainty, and ease to feel that their life matters.
Listeners will gain insight into resilience, interpretation, identity, and the quiet power of assigning significance — learning how meaning, when understood, becomes the anchor that keeps people moving forward.

    The Criminal Record Complex -...

Most employers in the United States routinely conduct criminal background checks on job applicants, weeding out those with criminal convictions. In this powerful analysis, Melissa Burch sheds light on one of the most significant forces of social and economic marginalization of our time—discrimination on the basis of criminal records. Chronicling the daily interactions of hiring managers, workforce development professionals, and job-seekers with felony convictions in Southern California, Burch shows that this discrimination is not simply a matter of employer bias. Hiring is shaped by a set of institutions, organizations, and industries that promote the erroneous idea that people with criminal records are dangerous to employ. Burch places today's routine practice of background screening within racialized notions of risk originating in early capitalist development, tracing how, over decades, criminal background checks became a convenient catch-all, leveraged by entities with a direct interest in growing the practice. Despite this reach, however, Burch discovers that small business owners tend to put less value on background checks, trusting their own judgment. Approaching the issue from both personal and policy perspectives, The Criminal Record Complex upends what we thought we knew about the causes of criminal record discrimination.

This book consists of two titles related to anxiety, which cover some of the following topics:
Book 1: What happens in our brain when we get anxious? Do physical changes appear? And what impact does that have on our health and relationships?
In this compact guide, we will explore the causes and consequences of anxiety, the ways to stop yourself from panicking too easily, or get stressed out too much. We will discuss strategies that have worked for others and that can work for you as well. Everybody gets anxious every once in a while. It’s okay if it is controlled, but if you are constantly stressed or upset, there is something wrong. That’s the time understanding anxiety can help.
Book 2: What can be done to prevent or reduce anxiety? Why is it that we get into panic mode so easily in our society today?
These are some of the questions that will be addressed. Other topics include the inner critic that makes you discouraged, what factors contribute to our stress levels, and the unusual consequences of anxiety you may not have thought of. This guide can be an eye-opener if you let it. It can help you become more aware of what is going on in your mind, thus removing some of the stress factors that are destroying physical and mental health.

  • Manifesto for the Revitalisation of Cities - A Solution to Portugal's Housing Crisis - cover

    Manifesto for the Revitalisation...

The housing crisis in Portugal serves to illustrate a problem that has implications beyond the borders of the country, shedding light on challenges that are faced by major European and global cities. The rise in housing prices, driven by real estate speculation, the growth of tourism and the influx of foreign investment, has made it increasingly challenging for many in the population, especially the middle and lower classes, to access home ownership or renting.
The digitalisation of work has opened the possibility for highly qualified professionals to consider where they would like to live, regardless of the physical location of their job. Cities like Lisbon and Porto have become increasingly attractive destinations, offering a good quality of life combined with a range of professional opportunities. Nevertheless, this phenomenon has placed additional strain on the real estate market, leading to rising prices and the displacement of residents to the outskirts.
The housing policies that have been adopted thus far have not been as effective as might have been hoped, and in some cases may even have had the opposite effect. It seems that measures such as strict rent control, poorly targeted subsidies and the massive construction of new housing without proper urban and infrastructural planning have not solved the problem, and in some cases may have made it worse. Perhaps it would be beneficial to reconsider these approaches, acknowledging their shortcomings and adapting them to reflect the current situation.
It may be worth considering rehabilitating vacant buildings as a viable and sustainable solution. By restoring existing buildings, we can explore ways to increase the supply of affordable housing, revitalise run-down urban areas and preserve historical and cultural heritage to promote more inclusive and sustainable cities.
