Sinossi

When Nina Planck toured to promote her two earlier books, Real Food and Real Food for Mother and Baby, the question she heard most was, “When are you going to write a cookbook?” At long last, The Real Food Cookbook is here.

In a dietary landscape overfull with low-carb bread and dubious advice about triglycerides, Planck is revolutionary in her complete embrace of a more old-fashioned and diverse way of eating. Aptly described by the Washington Post as “a cross between Alice Waters and Martha Stewart,” Planck showcases traditional, real foods-produce, dairy, meat, fish, eggs-through tempting and straightforward recipes for the beginner or regular home cook.

The Real Food Cookbook takes 150 classic dishes, from starters, soups, and salads to the center of the plate, to sweets and the cheese course, and makes them anew, transforming them with Nina's signature approach: using fresh herbs, good butter, seasonal fruits and vegetables, grass-fed and pastured meats, and whole grains. With essays and tips throughout, sharing Nina's own real-food lifestyle, The Real Food Cookbook will provide inspiration for any omnivorous cook or eater. Find recipes for every occasion: a cheese plate with drinks, a family Seder, Easter egg salads, a summer barbeque.Learn how Nina stocks her pantry and where she buys real food.Whether you're preparing the meals or simply eating them, everyone will enjoy the stories, feast on one hundred gorgeous full-color photographs, and beg the family cook to make the meals Nina loves.

"To be a vegetarian when you can eat meat is to deny the animal in you."
"To slaughter an animal, you have to love animals"!
"When living beings start to eat stones, the problem [of meat] will no longer be an issue."
These are some quotes from philosophers and intellectuals that defy logic and encourage cruelty. Instead of recognizing that we should not cause suffering and kill sentient beings just for our pleasure, these intellectuals justify the consumption of animal products. They support a society that slaughters millions of animals daily because it does not want to change its eating habits.
This book enumerates and denounces all the arguments developed by carnivores so that this great massacre can stop and a constructive debate on the place of animals in society can finally begin.
Through books, articles and television appearances, experts and journalists criticize, denounce and mock the defenders of animals. This is not without consequences. Nowadays, few people remain insensitive to the fate of livestock. When a film is shot inside a slaughterhouse and broadcast in the media, most people are shocked. Then, confronted with the arguments of vegans and vegetarians, they look for answers. What to think? What to do? What to eat? And then these intellectuals come along and tell them that vegans and vegetarians are wrong. Each time, the basic ethical principle that we should not cause suffering and kill a sentient being just for our own pleasure is forgotten or misinterpreted. Instead, these intellectuals advance arguments that defy logic, have no rational basis, and encourage cruelty. But in so doing, they reinforce a society that unnecessarily kills a staggering number of animals because it does not want to change its eating habits. This book takes the position of denouncing them loud and clear; not for the pleasure of criticizing, but in the hope that this clarification will contribute to stopping the great massacre of livestock and serve to launch a constructive debate on their place in society.

“Tupelo Honey Café offers not only offers tastes from its distinctive kitchen, but the full, delicious flavor of Asheville’s fresh, artisanal, food scene.” (Ronni Lundy, author of Shuck Beans, Stack Cakes and Honest Fried Chicken and Butter Beans to Blackberries)

Experiencing the food at the award-winning Tupelo Honey Cafe is an important part to understanding the heart of Asheville, NC. As an early pioneer in the farm-to-fork movement, chef Brian Sonoskus has been creating delicious dishes at the Tupelo Honey Cafe in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, since it first opened in 2000. And from then on, Tupelo's food has been consistently fresh, made from scratch, sassy, and scrumptious.

Heralding in its own unique style of cuisine representative of the New South, the Tupelo Honey Cafe salutes the love of Southern traditions at the table, but like the people of Asheville, marches to its own drum. The result is a cookbook collection of more than 125 innovative riffs on Southern favorites, illustrated with four-color photographs of the food, restaurant, locals, farmers' markets, and farms, in addition to black-and-white archival photography of Asheville. At Tupelo, grits become Goat Cheese Grits, fried chicken becomes Nutty Fried Chicken with Mashed Sweet Potatoes, and poached eggs become Eggs with Homemade Crab Cakes and Lemon Hollandaise Sauce.

Capturing the independent and creative spirit of Asheville, Tupelo has garnered praise from the New York Times, Southern Living, and the Food Network, just to name a few.

“Tupelo Honey Café’s recipes will appeal to the home cook because they’re oh-so-approachable. How many restaurant cookbooks can make that claim? Precious few!” –Jean Anderson, A Love Affair with Southern Cooking
