Sinossi

The Silver Star–awarded marine chronicles his service in Iraq in this “transcendent memoir of military service and its personal consequences” (Ralph Peters, Lt. Col., ret., author of Looking For Trouble).   In April, 2003, an AP photographer captured a striking image seen around the world of Gunny Sergeant Nick Popaditch smoking a victory cigar in his tank, the haunting statue of Saddam Hussein hovering in the background. Though immortalized in that moment as “The Cigar Marine,” Popaditch’s fighting was far from over.   The following year, he fought heroically in the battle for Fallujah and suffered grievous head wounds that left him legally blind and partially deaf. But he faced the toughest fight of his life when he returned home: the battle to remain the man and Marine he was.   At first, Nick fights to get back to where he was in Iraq-in the cupola of an M1A1 main battle tank, leading Marines in combat. As the seriousness and permanence of his disabilities become more evident, Nick fights to remain in the Corps in any capacity and help his brothers in arms. Then, following a medical retirement, he battles for rightful recognition and compensation for his disabilities. Throughout his harrowing ordeal, Nick fights to maintain his honor and loyalty, waging all these battles the same way—the Marine way—because anything less would be a betrayal of all he holds dear.

Ezekiel's Path is all about the journey that my son, along with the rest of my family, has taken and how we've come to be where we are. In these pages you will follow what it was like for our family as we took a crazy journey through childhood leukemia with our now 9-year-old son, Ezekiel. Just after Ezekiel's second birthday, he was diagnosed with leukemia. Read about the progression that we all went through and how we've come out of it all. Told mostly through my eyes, I'll do my best to convey what this journey was like as a father of a child with cancer. To Zeke: What started as a journal to simply vent my thoughts and emotions has turned into a message to share with the world. I have you to thank, my sweet boy. I love you with all my heart and I can’t wait for the day that this disease is eliminated from you forever!

"Be in general virtuous, and you will be happy," advises Benjamin Franklin, and he was a man who lived up to his own words. Franklin's Autobiography, one of the most regarded works in early American literature, began as a private collection of anecdotes for his son, but was soon transformed from reflective personal journaling into a work of national history. Filled with the inimitable nuances & wit of the inventor, philosopher, scientist and statesman, this engaging narration of Benjamin Franklin's classic is as certain to delight modern readers as it did with his original audience.

When a military coup in Ghana leads to the abrupt closure of Lally Pia's medical school, she is stranded thousands of miles away from her family - and left with no educational prospects, no money, and a botched American Green Card. But a Sri Lankan priest told Lally's father that she will one day become a "Doctor of Doctors" - a laughable outcome, given her current predicament.
This multicultural roller coaster illustrates the power of self-determination as Lally takes on obstacle after obstacle - an abusive relationship, the welfare state and a gruesome job where she has to dismember human bodies - in order to fulfill her dreams. A searing examination of the immigrant experience. The Fortune Teller's Prophecy is a nail-biting, four-continent quest for ultimate triumph.
