Sinopsis

Nick Carter—known to the captain and crew of the tramp steamer Cherokee as Sykes, the bos’n—heard this shout, taken up by man after man, as he lay stretched out on the foc’s’le head, in the early morning, just as the ship nosed her way into San Juan harbor, on the northern coast of Porto Rico.
The thrilling warning that somebody has fallen into the sea, which always sends a shock through both crew and passengers whenever heard, does not permit any ordinary person to remain quietly dozing.
The famous detective was one of the first to rush over to the side of the ship when the alarm had been given.
Close by him were his two assistants, Chick and Patsy Garvan, who, in the rôles of common sailors, had come down to Porto Rico to help him get back the fortune in jewels which had been stolen from Stephen Reed, the well-known New York millionaire.

Empires have been a fact of life for many thousands of years in all corners of the globe. Some have lasted a mere generation, others for a millennia. Some have defenders that cite advancements and security but detractors rail at the imposition of one culture upon defeated societies for no greater reason than conquest.

In this volume we put together stories from a wide range of classic authors, including Rudyard Kipling, Joseph Conrad, Talbot Mundy, Letitia Elizabeth Landon, H Rider Haggard and many others to view the British Empire both from the inside as subjects and from the outside as writers through engrossing narratives. These literary leviathans could observe, sample, question and report as part of an Empire upon which the sun never set and who’s morals were sometimes good, but often bad, as it bestrode the world as Imperial policeman and bully-in-chief grabbing the profits of others as it imposed a Pax Britannica that was in reality only of real benefit to the elite at home.

Times may have changed yet these stores offer a fascinating insight into the world as it was.

Ex-intelligence agent James Ryker has done many things in the past he’d prefer to forget. In a city where love is heavily audited and intimacy is a crime, the ultimate act of rebellion is a counterfeit bond.
Maeve Moondance is the undisputed smuggler-bride of Halcyon's undercity. She brokers illegal pair-bond contracts for the desperate, protecting them from the brutal mathematics of the state's Mercy Index. She deals in fake devotion but refuses to love—until a raid tears her empire apart. Captured by Magistrate Galen Grimshaw, an iron-willed enforcer of the upper courts with a tragic past of his own, Maeve expects the execution platforms. Instead, Galen offers a deadly bargain. He needs her black-market expertise to dismantle a human trafficking ring orchestrated by Halcyon's elites.
Their mission requires the unthinkable: infiltrating a high-society marriage auction by posing as a deeply devoted, heavily sanctioned couple. As they navigate glittering ballrooms and avoid the watchful eyes of state auditors, the lines between their fabricated romance and true desire begin to dangerously blur. But in a punitive regime where vulnerability is an absolute death sentence, surrendering to the illusion might just cost them their lives.

Weaving classic cyberpunk aesthetics, enemies to lovers tension, fake dating tropes, and edge-of-your-seat dystopian sci-fi world-building, this installment of The Mercy Index series promises unputdownable suspense.
