Johnser Kiely was brought up the hard way, one of a large family in a glass-splattered playground in a Ballyfermot Estate. Johnser finds love and trouble in equal measure as his reckless impulses lead him down a dangerous path. While Jackie Clarke is drawn to his wild spirit, Johnser's knack for robbing and fighting could cost him everything - his freedom, family and his very life. Tensions build to a pivotal night when a gun is drawn and fates are forever altered in this gritty tale of star-crossed lovers from the wrong side of the tracks. The original Dublin novel of the classic love story about Hard Man Johnser Kiely and his long-suffering partner Jackie Clarke. This cult classic is now a Cannes-celebrated film by Gilles Lellouche 'L'Amour Ouf' (Beating Hearts).

There is something about the number 3.

The Ancient Greeks believed 3 was the perfect number, and in China 3 has always been a lucky number, and they know a thing or two.

Most religions also have 3 this and 3 that and, of course, in these more modern times, three’s a crowd may be too many, except when it’s a ménage à trois. It seems good things usually come in threes.

Whatever history and culture says WE think 3, a hat-trick of stories, is a great number to explore themes and literary avenues that classic authors were so adept at creating.

Sherlock Holmes - His Last Bow

Conan Doyle had attempted to bring his Sherlock Holmes stories to a fitting close in 1893 with “The Final Problem” but public outrage both persuaded him to resurrect his famous detective.
It was therefore not through a dramatic struggle with the evil Professor Moriarty atop an Alpine waterfall that Holmes was to leave the literary world, but instead he was to bow out gracefully and patriotically in the series of stories published in 1917 under the title “His Last Bow”.
These short stories are as full as ever of the author’s imaginative skill in providing puzzles and conundrums for his creation. Within these tales Holmes at last meets an official detective who comes a little closer to employing his acute methods of reasoning. There is a story of crazed jealousy which produces a grisly souvenir of the crime. Holmes and Watson encounter in the streets of London a Mafia like organisation intent on revenge and in the wilds of Cornwall revenge of a different kind in connection with an horrific and macabre murder.
The final story places Holmes in the very specific time frame of the First World War, persuaded out of retirement and calling once again upon his old and trusted friend Watson, to capture an enemy spy.
Head Stories Audio presents "His Final Bow" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - narrated by Simon Hester. With original music.

The investigation into people connected to the area begins to focus on a family farm. But how were the victims connected to it?

When Madog, an elderly member of the small community disappears, the detectives become pretty sure someone on the farm is responsible. But who? And why?

This sparkling collection of 7 short stories by Ferber including some that are considered her all time best like The Woman Who Tried To be Good and The Maternal Feminine. Writing for and about women, Edna Ferber touches the very heart and soul of what it means to be human; to make good choices and bad; to be weak and strong. This was a very popular book when published in 1913
