Manet is one of the most famous artists from the second half of the nineteenth century linked to the impressionists, although he was not really one of them. He had great influence on French painting partly because of the choice he made for his subjects from everyday life, the use of pure colours, and his fast and free technique. He made, in his own work, the transition between Courbet’s Realism and the work of the impressionists.
Born a high bourgeois, he chose to become a painter after failing the entry to the Marine School. He studied with Thomas Couture, an Academic painter, but it was thanks to the numerous travels he made around Europe from 1852 that he started to find out what would become his own style.
His first paintings were mostly portraits and genre scenes, inspired by his love for Spanish masters like Velázquez and Goya. In 1863 he presented his masterpiece Luncheon on the Grass at the Salon des Refusés. His work started a fight between the defenders of Academic art and the young “refusés” artists. Manet became the leader of this new generation of artists.
From 1864, the official Salon accepted his paintings, still provoking loud protests over works such as Olympia in 1865. In 1866, the writer Zolá wrote an article defending Manet’s work. At that time, Manet was friends with all the future great impressionist masters: Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro and Paul Cézanne, and he influenced their work, even though he cannot strictly be counted as one of them. In 1874 indeed, he refused to present his paintings in the First Impressionist Exhibition. His last appearance in the official Salon was in 1882 with A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, one of his most famous works. Suffering from gangrene during the year 1883, he painted flower still-lifes until he became too weak to work. He died leaving behind a great number of drawings and paintings.

In the game of poker, the two most fundamental mathematical ideas are known as probability and odds. Players who have a solid grasp of these ideas will be more equipped to make intelligent choices while competing. The possibility that an event will take place is referred to as its probability, and odds are defined as the proportion of the probability that an event will take place relative to the probability that it will not take place.
When playing poker, players must determine their odds and calculate probability in order to determine whether or not they will win a hand. For instance, a player who already has a pair of aces has a 4.2% chance of hitting another ace on the flop, turn, or river of the hand they are playing. The odds of getting another ace are 22.5 to 1, which indicates that a player will get another ace once for every 23 times they have a pair of aces. In other words, the odds of getting another ace are 1 in 23.
Players are able to make better decisions at the table by improving their ability to calculate odds and probabilities. If a player has a flush draw, for instance, they can determine their chances of getting a flush by counting the number of cards that are still in the deck that will complete their flush. This allows them to calculate their odds of hitting a flush. On the turn or the river, the player has a 19.1% probability of hitting their flush if there are nine cards left in the deck that will complete the flush.
Another essential idea in poker mathematics is the concept of expected value, abbreviated EV. The expected value, or EV, of a bet is the amount of money that a player can anticipate winning or losing on average over the course of a long session.

The Ironclads of Cambrai

When tanks, the newly invented British weapon, were used for the first time in a mass attack on November 20 1917, they not only achieved one of the most remarkable successes of the First World War but set the pattern for the future of mechanized warfare.  For the first time in three years of bloody trench warfare, epitomized by the slaughter at Passchendaele which was then reaching its climax, tanks brought about a breakthrough of the massive German defense system of the Hindenburg Line, followed up by British infantry and cavalry divisions.  They were supported for the first time by low flying fighter aircraft of the Royal Flying Corps.  The initial victory at Cambrai brought cheering crowds into the streets of London and the ringing of church bells in celebration.  In seemed possible that the success might bring about the final defeat of Germany.  But the British High Command failed to exploit the success.  Generals who still dreamt of massive cavalry charges had not had much faith in this strange new weapon that had been brought to them  funded initially by the Royal Navy at the behest of Winston Churchill who was then First Lord of the Admiralty and did see its value.  The High Command did not really believe the breakthrough was possible and tragically miscalculated the necessary steps to follow it up.  Within days the Germans counterattacked and regained much of the ground that the British had won.  What could have been the final victory was delayed for another year.
